The FT reports on buyer's remorse in the North East...

The British car industry issued a clear warning: leaving the EU could put jobs at risk.
But just a few days later Sunderland, the home of Nissan, delivered its verdict: a resounding 61.3 per cent of people voted for Brexit regardless.
Steven, a Nissan production line worker in his 30s who declined to give his surname, said he had woken the morning after voting for Brexit and thought: “What have I done?”
We will never know which way its Sunderland employees — or the 20,000 other people in its north-east supply chain — voted. But according to Steven, the workers around him were outspoken in their desire for Brexit.
Steven, unable to turn the clock back, said: “Hopefully our government, when they eventually get themselves sorted out, will put money into Nissan. If the government say don’t leave, we will make an offer you can’t refuse — hopefully that’s what’s going to happen.”

Nissan builds cars in the UK for one reason and one reason only that is so they get access to the open market in europe
if they build a car within the EU it can be sold anywhere within the EU without penalty if we take the UK out of europe and lose access to the open market then nissan along with all the other japanese car manufacturers that have plants within the UK will be looking at the viability of their plants in the UK
we in the UK cant buy everything that nissan builds within the UK so they need access to the free market in Europe0 -
Good luck to them! I certainly won't be happy if my tax goes to pay for their mess up.
They've tried to have their cake and eat it, and just realised they can't.💙💛 💔0 -
And if Sunderland had voted even 100% remain, it would not have changed the outcome so who would you blame then?0

Didn't peugeot move a car plant from coventry (inside the eu) to turkey (outside) and yet I bet they still sold the output into eu markets.
Dont know but if they did lower wages would balance out any tariff impact. Sunderland wouldn't be able to do that. Unless of course the lads want Turkish wagesLeft is never right but I always am.0 -

Turkey has a goods free trade agreement with the EU. It can't export services to the EU tariff free.
Services are a huge UK export to the EU.0 -
