Actually I've learnt a very valuable lesson over the last few days seeing just how well a well diversified fund like VLS has held up compared to the more narrowly focused funds I have a little bit in!!

  • Literally anything which is not valued in GBP will seem to have risen, from a UK perspective. But if the pound strengthens quickly then I expect to see recent portolio gains retreat & I will kick myself if that happens. Feels like a tough call. Anyone sold up yet?

That is why sector allocation/asset allocation models are so popular and common sense.

I also have the VLS 80% and have seen good gains over the last few days!

Been pleased with the performance of this fund so far.

I am a newbie investor and this is the only fund that I have. I have been drip feeding monthly for about 3 years. Tempted to try some other funds as want a bit more excitement and getting bored with seeing the same fund every time I log into my accounts. lol.. but I should probably leave it as it is....

Leave it as it is. Find your excitement elsewhere.

I've been sticking £25 a month in Marlborough UK Micro Cap Growth for the last couple of years. Excitement is one way of putting it ;)

Are you a daytrader? In shares and currencies? If not what would be your rationale for attempting to time both? Consider it juggling with sharpened knives, it may look spectacular but at some point when you slip up its going to get very bloody.

That is a strange thing to do. Why not pick one that matches your profile rather than picking funds either side of it?

There is a 10 year age gap between me and my wife, and the money in my name is in VLS80, with the money in my wife's name split between 60/40/20. We haven't worked out when she is going to retire, so wanted to keep our options option. As and when we work out a date, we intend to move money to the 20 fund, as that date approaches. Maybe it's a completely stupid thing to do, but it made sense in my head, but then again that means nothing!!

I intend to retire in 9 years time, so will also move money from 80 to the other lower risk VLS funds as the date gets closer

Your wife's money could just as easily all be in vls 40, though the allocation would be very slightly different from your current arrangement.

Have you looked at their new (to the uk at least) targeted retirement funds, not a recommendation just a suggestion.

Also, the more cautious investor may want to consider the L&G funds rather than the VLS. The lower risk asset classes and sectors have a much better spread with L&G.
