    OP if you don't want the bill to go through the roof get WB out on a fixed priced repair I think it's around £260
    I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

    Agreed Worcester Bosch best bet, after all they manufactured the boiler in first place.

    WB is the the best boiler :rotfl::rotfl:

    Someone else who doesn't know what they are talking about

    For future reference, what combi boiler do you believe is the best for domestic purposes?

    Ask 10 engineers & get 10 different answers, all boilers aren't bullet proof & have things that could go wrong, personally I recommend Baxi or Intergas

    Only got 9 years out of my WB, & that was pre condenser, after spending a lot on repairs (pump casing leaking) etc was told it was not repairable. Bit disappointed after being recommended as a best buy.

    My independent local gas chap who has installed two WB combo boilers over the years always says they are the best, and won't really entertain the idea of other makes. I did wonder whether there might be some sort of cash back scheme for engineers who fit them!

    I have a WB Greenstar Junior 28i, installed November 2005, originally had lots of problems due solely to bad installation which were covered by the WB guarantee, I'm confident the boiler itself was fine. Last winter, on the advice of my very honest regular heating engineer (Elderwood, I highly recommend), I took out a WB Protection Plan as I needed a major repair (fan failure), which would have cost more than the annual Plan cost to repair, but which was done for no extra payment under the new Plan. My question is should I continue to pay the annual Plan? How long should I expect this boiler to last? The Protection Plan now costs (2nd year) £258pa, including one free service, but should I be buying the service from Elderwood (£78) and putting the extra money aside towards a new boiler? Any views?

    The average life of a boiler is 10-15 yrs, long gone are the days of 40 yrs boilers that only require a thermocouple every 5 yrs, the WB junior isn't a very good boiler anyway & is prone to breaking down, you have already said you took out the plan because it was cheaper than replacing the fan so who is to say something else isn't going to go wrong this year ?
    Repair plans are no different to paying for the AA you hope your car isn't gonna break down but you are glad to see the yellow van if it does.

  • If you can't fix it yourself, you leave little choice but to call a professional.

    Your two choices are;

    1. Call a Local, private Gas Safe Registered engineer and take the risk on their knowledge, judgement and pay their prices.

    2. Call one of the larger companies and consider a one-off repair, or joining an insurance scheme.

    The boiler itself is one of the most popular boilers in the UK but like everything these days, they aren't built to last.

    The diagnosis in your original post (The engineer said it is the Gas Valve... could also be the PCB...) leads me to believe the engineer you called could not be certain, and this would nudge me towards option 2. 'the larger companies' - as they will absorb the cost of the materials in their 'one-off repair' charges and usually offer 12 month warranty with the part(s) they replace/repair on the visit.

    On the bright side, it's supposedly Summertime, so you can afford to hunt for the best price!
