builders mistakes

Should they rectify their mistakes even its going to cost them or ask customer if they would accept the mistake. My builder asked me today if it was ok for me to accept wrong handles fitted on my kitchen cupboards. Its for howdens tewkesbury kitchen cupboards oak twisted handles. They put twisted handles also on drawers but supposed to be oak buttons on drawers and twisted handles on cupboards. Looks too crowded when you look at them with so many handles :( I said ok first then thought I paid £9000 for this kitchen and I want them perfect. So texted him that I dont want them but no reply so far :( Just came from my night shift and I am upset looking at my cupboards.

He should have checked the contents of the hardware (i.e runners, screws, clips and handles etc) box against the order sheet and checked them off before assembly.

Ring the supplier tell them you want the original configuration that you asked for, and that upon reflection your not happy to accept these handles and you want what you ordered.

Having paid £9000 for a Howdens kitchen, it is to be expected the builder will give satisfaction. His mark up is likely to be eye watering and the costs and inconvenience can easily be swallowed. However if OP has paid in full for the kitchen this could be a difficult course to follow.

Also, we on this forum do not know what was on the order, nor what OP accepted when ordering. OP wanted different handles, but was this clearly conveyed to Howdens and the builder? Equally, as this is an unusual request, OP should have checked with Howdens that this was happening. If these checks occurred then the builder does not have a leg to stand on.

Expect a battle here if resolving the dispute means new door and drawer fronts. I say this because the new handles/knobs may have one hole not two, and be in a different position. Hence the existing doors/drawers are ruined. It is for this reason OP should have been proactive. If they were then fine, stand your ground.

OK, but did these plans and pictures clearly show the different handles details? If so, (and the drawings may not be this detailed) why did Howdens supply the wrong handles? This suggests Howdens supplied what they believe was agreed on - after all if Howdens were aware different handles were required these would have been listed and supplied.

As Howdens are trade only that will be the builder then.

The way I've read it, it's only the drawers that are wrong.

Yes pictures were showing definitly the different fronts. If you know those handles (new range by howdens) they are supplied with different knobs on drawers. The builder came to me with plan in his hand showing the mistake he did. And yes the problem is they put 2 holes on drawers while needed only one in the middle. I will call the howdens kutchen planner and ask him. Thanks.

The kitchen planner may not be interested in your complaint. Your contract is with the builder and not anything to do with Howdens. Howdens can do nothing for you, even if they are sympathetic, without the co-operation of your builder.

    That's not true.
  • Presumably this builder (?kitchen fitter?) gets a noticeable amount of work from Howdens - and would like to continue receiving it.

So - at least in that respect - Howdens can put pressure on the builder to get the job right.
