BT - Penalty for deal - Is this right/fair?!

Options
Have been in discussions with BT over new deal. Our last deal ended in June, had assumed we would be paying the same amount each month, but looking back at the bills we starting being charged for the "free" BT Sport, the line rental sent up £1pm and the broadband went up by £2. Apparently we were informed by email and post (we can't find any emails or post relating to this) and as we didn't call at the time of the bill to question the increase, we apparently accepted the increase. Our fault for not looking at the bills, assuming the amount would be the same for a year. Our focus was elsewhere.

Have been offered Infinity 2 at £22.50pm + £18.99pm line rental for 24 months. Am a little stuck with BT and Infinity 2 as I need the high speed and un-managed upload speeds for my video work.

On asking what the penalty was for breaking the contract mid-term if we needed to move etc was told that it would be the remainder of the contract time at the standard price (I think this is somewhere between £30-£40 but can't actually find details for it), not the £22.50 discount price for the 24 months.

It's obviously their T&Cs and we'll have to agree to if we go ahead, but it doesn't seem fair/right...? I understand paying out the rest of the contract that they would lose out on if we left early, but to pay out more than the value of the remainder of the contract seems cheeky/naughty/a bit not on...?

If you did cancel you will probably find its your current contract times the remaining months .That is the norm not what they suggested to you .

It is normal for the price to revert to standard once out of contract and you are usually told its x £ for twelve month deal rising to X++ on month 13 or 25 .

By the way your line rental will rise on 3rd July .Advanced Line Rental paid before 2nd July will not rise .
  • Thanks for that JJ Egan. I did ask the woman repeatedly to be certain and she seemed adamant that was the penalty. Thanks again though.
