I'm just waiting for the inevitable "freeman on the land" argument to be made now...I'll get the popcorn in.0

I am interested to know the outcome of the original poster's problem. I have so much sympathy after dealing with the SLC this year.
I have recently moved to Germany with my wife and due to differences in tax rates I am paying an incredible amount of my salary to the SLC, more than 150% of their maximum repayment amount (which it turns out is a maximum default amount). I am already taking up the issue of the calculation up with the SLC and DfE, but this is beside the point. It just demonstrates my feeling of not wanting to be done over by the SLC again.
My wife has now told me her mother has received post asking what she is up to now. Reading the SLC guidelines on moving overseas, she should tell them she has moved abroad and provide evidence of her support, such as bank statements. She is in the same situation as the original poster, she does not even have her own bank account here yet and basically I buy everything. I do not want them to calculate a further repayment amount based on my earnings.
So, has the original issue been resolved? Did your parents show their evidence? Finally, are you or your parents basically being forced to pay anything back?0 -
Student finance are responsible for ensuring student loans are repaid when appropriate.
Anyone claiming they are not liable to repay their loan is asked to provide proof of that.
If you were claiming you were living off savings they would need to see evidence that you had enough savings to live off.
As you are claiming you have no income but are being supported they want to see evidence that the person supporting you has the ability to do so and you are not claiming falsely to avoid repaying your student loan.
Alternatively, you could make voluntary repayments to avoid having to provide such evidence.
I disagree. Proving by your own bank statements etc that you have no income should be sufficient. Also hmrc provide income details to slc once a year, so that should verify that there is no income above repayment thresholds.
Why do you need to show how you are being supported. Unless you have income above the thresholds you don't need to make repayments. Why should further proof be required?I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. SLC verify whether there is a match between a customer and an employment record with HMRC. If there isn't SLC send a confirmation of customer details form to establish how you are supporting yourself. For example, you may have cleared off abroad...0
