Treats should be high value (e.g not just their normal food) but can be really tiny - reduce meals slightly if dog is prone to weight gain.

I use dehydrated chicken, my dogs love it, but you just need to find what really motivates your dog. There are recipes online for things like liver cake which tends to be well received, or you could cook some chicken, little bits of beef, etc.

Could it be that when there is a sudden smell and then he licks, his anal glands just emptied? I do know that those things smell a LOT and when the Vet used to empty my dogs, she'd want to lick right off

If it is his teeth, it's pretty simple. My Chaya just had a dental and was 12.5yrs old, so old for a Staffy, and she was totally fine. She also had a lump on her leg removed last October and again was ok, despite concerns about her liver

Krylr gives amazing advice so i'm sure there's plenty in there to go on x

Morning Uktigerlily - it definitely is a sudden smell and really strong it fills the room - and for much longer than a 'fart' smell would ! (tmi!)
Part of me wonders deep down if it is a tooth problem and smells really bizarre. He only licks his lips when the smell around. He also has a bad habit of licking his bed quite a lot and the smell doesnt seem to pass to there.
Krlyr definitely gives great advice - the links to videos are really good.

Teddysmum - our pooch would probably be agressive and wouldnt trust him not to take a bit out of the poor vet. He has snapped at us but not actually connected.

Teddy, in my user name, though a cavalier , can be a real devil (though he is mellowing at 12). In his days of 'Come near and I'll bite you' he actually loved the vets (especially one of the ladies), even co-operating by lifting a leg to have his post castration stitches removed.

I wonder if it is his sinuses. That teeth chattering and lip licking could be in response to a pile of grot draining down from his sinuses to the back of his mouth.

What type of food do you feed him? This can play a big part in breath.

Monty, my big cavalier lad used to teeth chatter and lip smack if he touched something such as someone's worn underwear or socks , if he sniffed one of the others after they had done a wee or sniffed their poo.
