We are currently looking to rent houses and we have two pet rats, a lot of places are 'no pets' but I know if you do have a pet they may charge you extra for them.
However rats have quite a bad rep and a lot of people think they're smelly, dirty ect. When they are the cutest and most loving caged animal I have met.
Should I tell future landlords I have rats? Will it be bad if I tell landlords they are gerbils ect?

From the title I thought that you were asking how you would break the news to the rats that you were going to rent :rotfl:0

I was also going to ask the OP how much understanding of the news the rats would have?0

Don't bother saying anything. Particularly if you are renting a house. As long as you keep the cages clean and odour free, I'm not sure why the LL would ever know.
Most LL's aren't keen on dogs. You have rats.0 -
I wouldn't see it as a problem, providing I was informed.I am a LandLord,(under review) so there!:p0

I'd have thought that "small pets" weren't really of any concern to the landlord... but if you've got 30 of them that you give the full run of the house to, then that's a different matter.
"No pets" is about a pet's ability to cause problems in the property or with the neighbours. e.g. scratching, chewing, fleas, floods (huge fish tank), barking, cat/dog poo, etc.
If it's 1-2 small, cage-restrained, rats, then I'd not mention it.0 -
Find a place that already has its own rats; then nobody can say anything.0

If anyone finds out, put on a fake Spanish accent and say emphatically,
"No, is only hamsters!"0 -

I think it would be better to tell your landlord in advance and start off on good footing with a landlord.0

I once had a (nightmare) tenant who was a rat and had a rat - unbeknown to me.Went round one day to speak to her and could hear running water - the rat had escaped, chewed through the washing machine pipe which flooded the flat. Take from this what you will. Needless to say she left VERY soon after that.0
