Water based paints - sanding between each coat?

When i painted the woodwork (doorframes, bannisters, spindles etc) upstairs, i had ample time on my hands & so i sanded between each stage.
I layered up 2 coats of primer. I'd bought a tin of undercoat (thinking it was the same stuff as primer only to later be told it wasn't) so i threw 1 or 2 coats on of that as well (can't remember how many) & then 2 coats of the top coat which was satin for everything bar the skirting which was gloss.

All the Johnstones Aqua range except for the Satin which was Sikkens.

So i would sand>prime>sand>prime>sand>undercoat>sand etc.

Excessive & unnecessary, probably, but i was happy with the end result & some of the tradesmen we've had in have commented on the finish being good.

I've got downstairs to paint now & i've just hit it with 2x Zinsser BIN coats.
Thing is i don't have the same luxury with time like i did when i did the upstairs.

How much sanding is necessary? Between which stages would you sand & would you not bother sanding? I don't generally get any runs when painting so i don't have those to sand out.

If it is best to do it like i did upstairs then i'll do that but if it's perfectly fine skipping steps then i'll go with that instead.

I'm a novice so throwing it out there to the more experienced of people.

Hope my detail was enough detail for your detailing requirements Furts :p

You don't need to prime twice and I take it you've only done the knots with Zinsser like you've already been told?

Sand, knotting, primer, undercoat or primer undercoat, then top coat is all that's needed. De nib if needed.

Nope, i coated the whole thing. No harm done with it & i've enough paint so why not??

I wasn't asking whether i should coat the whole thing though was i?

But it's another thing for you to take a shot at me over. So i'm sure you'll feel free.
    De nib if needed.
What's nibbing? Never mind DE nibbing?
    you are over analysing it.
I have a tendency to do that, but it's Friday evening & i can just drop a question on a forum, pick up the answer later that night or early the next morning & get to cracking with no harm done to anyone. No fluffy rabbits injured in any way :)

    But thanks for the reply.

He already appreciated it when i pointed him there some weeks ago.

Although it amazes me why people feel the need to do this (what you just did).

Kind of like ... hey everyone, i know something, hey i said everyone why aren't you looking at me? I'm telling you i know something so look at me please.

    Like ... what .... is .... the .... point?!?!

Oh I'm sorry I thought you were just spot treating the knots.

Oh and as for why not, is because you find BIN a PITA to work with not a good enough reason?

Seriously, you are over complicating things, why have you bothered to strip the woodwork back to wood only to repaint again?

Spend your time and efforts into sorting the damp first. You've decorated and are now getting new windows, !!!!!!? To be left with the damp.

Sort the damp first, get new windows then decorate. :wall:
  • Ok since i'm in the mood & you seem to want to follow me around & criticise, let's go for it...

I may find it a PITA ...... doesn't mean i can't do it though. I find working with some of the people at my workplace a PITA but i have to do it. I find certain members on this forum a PITA but i still post knowing they're going to be taking shots in the hope that more helpful people ... will be helpful.

Why have I bothered to strip the woodwork back to wood only to repaint? That's a very good question. You point out where i stripped the skirting back to wood & THEN i'll answer your question. Or are you just ASSUMING i stripped it back because it helps you take another shot at me? Hmm.

Well i've spoken to the council & the water company about this damp. I've spoken with various independent damp specialists, had them out at the house at cost, those who do the damp work (a total of 4 different companies came out with slightly varying approaches). The house opposite has the same problem, the house at the rear has the same problem & they've been in touch with other various professions regards this damp issue cause & every single one of them came to pretty much the same conclusion.

So i'm intrigued. How do YOU Silver-Surfer suggest that we 'SORT' this damp issue? Since you seem to disagree with all these professions. At the very least tell me where these professions are going wrong so i can point them in the right direction.

You also never told me what de nibbing was.

Is that because that would be informative?

Much better to spend our time taking shots instead i suppose? Who wants to be informative eh?!
  • denibbing ‎(plural denibbings) The process of removing nibs trapped in a layer of a surface finish or paint.
  • So getting rid of any 'bits' that get in with the paint then? Dried paint or dirt or whatever, which interferes with your finish.

Thankfully it doesn't happen much. The BIN aside, i paint slow because i generally can. I'm anal (probably of no surprise) so i check over & check over to see if the surface is looking A-ok, anything missed, anything like dirt etc got on the surface.

I'm sure i have some form of OCD, but such is life. It's not harming anyone for now :)
  • Undercoating is necessary with all paints?
