I had to call a ambulance to my apartment 2 years ago, 2 paramedics arrived followed by a further more senior medic in another vehicle.
I had a panic attack and after ECG, blood pressure etc tests were complete and they were confident I was well enough to get back to normal I was asked to produce my card, I went to my wallet to get my ViSA card thinking that's what they wanted only to be told no it's just your EHIC we require, details added to my paperwork they issued, got my test results and never heard another thing.
    So yes they do work.

I have, 3 times. Do you doubt they work??

There are hotels, tour operators etc who will have arrangements with private doctors/clinics and will point you are those by default, but if you do a bit of basic research on the country you're going to you'll know how to access their state healthcare.

No didn't doubt they work, just never heard of anyone actually using one and wondered if anyone had.
  • We have not left the EU yet, we had a referendum which actually isn't legally binding and could be over ruled by parliament, until article 50 is triggered, which won't be done until there is a new Tory Leader/Prime Minister, we have not even started the formal proceedings to leave, once article 50 is triggered, it will be at least another 2 years before we are formally out of the EU, until such time we are still bound by EU treaties and laws.

  • I came to Switzerland to find work, still looking
Had a stomach problem and had to go in an ambulance to the hospital, spent 5 days and returned to my dwelling with a huge bill to greet me.
My EHIC card was presented on arrival
    Can someone please help.
What should I do with this chilling bill
I tried calling the number on the back of the card for info, but it goes through to HMS Customs and they say they cannot help me.and give me the same number and I am going around in circles, which is NOT helping my recovery too much
I read one is liable for half the cost of the ambulance, how much for the hospital? and do I have to cough up the whole amount first? then how do I claim
Anyone's help will be much appreciated,as I cannot just let this bill sit idle
