Compensation for missing connecting flights

Our BA flight was 56 mins late causing us to miss the last flight from Almeria to Madrid. We were put up in a hotel and flew on the next day but ultimately arrived 11.5 hours late for our holiday. Are we due compensation? We lost a day and experienced a lot of inconvenience for our young family?

Thank you the guide is very useful. The Folkerts judgement obviously applies - is the journey length the second leg and do internal flights, (i.e. Madrid to Almeria) still satisfy the compensation criteria?

from your post last year this would be a claim into BA.
Best to check the NWNF sites with your flight, connection and revised flight details and they will give an indication on whether compensation applies.
If the delay was caused by air traffic restrictions or weather then compensation does not apply
