Contract coming to end... Unexpected Charges!?

Fifth Anniversary Combo Breaker
Hi there

Finally my 2 year Three mobile contract is coming to an end on 1st July 2016 and I've decided to save money and go with a SIM only deal with another provider. I called up Three yesterday, thanking them for the 6 years of great service I had received but I had decided not to renew my contract with them. After about a good 30mins of hard sell, they terminated my contract. I have one last payment of £32 coming out within the next few days... or so I thought. Apparently, from yesterday I have begun a 30 day notice period ending July 21st 2016 up to which point I must pay for, I requested an estimate and they said the final bill was going to be around £22 and that I would be billed for this a few days after July 23rd.

Do I really need to give and pay for this notice period? I can understand this kind of thing if I was mid contract, however, as far as I'm concerned come July 1st 2016, I have no legally binding contact, very confusing and a little frustrating. I'd rather everything just cancel and move on.

Hope you wonderful people can help,

Kindest regards,

Toby L

    Yes you do.

Your contract doesn't 'end', it just reaches it's minimum term and then continues to be a rolling 30 day notice contract - standard T&C with most mobile contracts .... sorry.

Of course it's too late now , but to avoid this you need to call 30 days before the minimum term ends, but no sooner. Takes some organisation but is pretty normal for mobile, Sky, broadband contracts etc.

    It's normal.

I don't see why mobile companies are not forced to do the same as utility companies, banks. Just phone up the new supplier you want and they do the rest.

Not a lot of difference; you effectively still give them 30 days' notice via another method, since it always still takes longer than 30 days to switch.
