Cannot register on Electoral Roll - Notice of Correction (NOC) - Good or bad idea?

Options
Hello everyone.

I need some advice on Notice of corrections. My partner moved to the U.K about 15 months ago and we are working on building her credit worthiness with a long term goal of applying for a mortgage.

Current credit report status is
  • £500 limit Lloyds credit card (Which Experian flags as a bad thing. Apparently limit needs to be £1001 or more).
  • Lloyds current account with £500 overdraft (not being used - used once in error).
  • Water bill account (Odd one - only shows on Experian and also the sewerage one does not show anywhere)
  • Mobile phone contract account.
  • Settled monthly payment account for car insurance last year (Oddly only shows up on Equifax)

Being foreign and not from a Commonweath country we know she cannot get onto the electoral roll. We are currently signed up for the free 30 day trials with Experian and Equifax whose representitives have both said she should add a Notice of Correction to her credit report.
Having had a search through old threads on here the advice seems to suggest NOCs are not a good idea as lenders apparently either just do not like them or do not allocate staff resources to read them. My understanding is that once in place, all credit applications might be auto declined primarily for having one....we are confused.

Is a notice of correction for not being on the voters roll a good thing or not?

The idea is to make a few largish credit purchases like furniture and pay them off after a few months (money already saved up) to show activity. Both DFS and SCS staff said we would be automatically declined for not being on electoral roll hence the above question.

Any other credit building suggestions are welcome.

Thanks

I am also not from the EU. It hasn't made any difference to me. I've been able to get mortgages, loans, credit cards and overdrafts without being registered to vote.

The staff don't know whether you will be declined or not. Your partner seems to have some credit so should be able to be identified through the credit referencing agency without needing to prove who she is.

I would though not recommend loans through DFS or SCS instead getting a credit card with a 0% offer or a personal loan.

I'd also like to add she doesn't need good credit for you both to get a mortgage. If your credit is good they can base the decision on your income and your credit history.

I'd just every 3 months keep applying for a new card. Watch the "score" on Noddle and Clearscore. It doesn't really mean anything but when it jumps up that's when I'd apply for a new card. It will then drop to zero for another few months. It's not perfect but it gives you an idea.
    :footie:
:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

Thanks for the response. Can you please clarify for me - did you place a notice of correction on your credit file or were you fine without one? Also, were your credit applications approved automatically? When my partner got her Lloyds account and credit card at the local branch, it involved a lot of internal phone calls and system overiding as the computer had said no....
Also, If you don't mind telling me, how long had you lived here before being able to get a mortgage?

Thanks for that, we were speaking about getting a Halifax Clarity credit card for travelling abroad so might go for it. Any reason why a DFS account is not reccommended?

Due to high house prices I think our mortgage would have to be joint as my income alone would be insufficient. My partner also earns more than me. Would the income of a partner be taken into account when the mortgage application is not joint?

    Thanks

I had exactly the same dilemma as you.

i chose not to put any corrections on my credit file, and i have had numerous card, loans and a mortgage.

I applied for a mortgage after 15 months or so of living in the UK.

For the lender offering the finance it may well be a basic requirement. Adding a NOC will make no difference. As your partner doesn't meet this particular requirement. Electoral roll registration is what ties history from addresses together and provides a trail. There's no shortcuts.
