Halifax account - rejected

I would take your business elsewhere. If they are this inflexible in the application process, then what would they be like to deal with if you were a customer?
As far as I know previous occupants of your property do not have an impact on your credit score. Also, if your application was declined for the same (lack of) reason as mine, it certainly wouldn't be because of the previous occupants - I live in a new build, and have always lived alone!
I do wonder if this is one of those situations where your credit profile is too good. In the current banking system, good customers don't really make the bank any profit. Maybe they would rather you had a string of late payments and CCJ's against you?!
You can write a letter of appeal, but this has to go to your local branch, so you probably won't get much further. I didn't want to go down that route because it seemed a bit like begging for them to take my custom!
Sorry I can't be more help ... and I'm not bitter ... honest! xGone ... or have I?0 -
If any consolation, I just got declined too.
Rang them to query it, and they gave me the usual spiel about credit scoring. I then advised her that I had my report on the screen in front of me, and I have no late payments, no recent searches etc. Also, it is not a question of having no credit history as I have had one for the past ten years. I even got accepted for Capital One's notoriously hard to get credit card (I didn't tell her that bit)!
She put me on hold then ...
She has suggested I print off my report and take it into branch. TBH I'm so annoyed I think I will just take my business elsewhere!
I know this is the account that Martin recommends, maybe he should research what their elusive criteria is!
How did you get your report "on the screen"? Can you download it? My son was refused by the Abbey today, He already has a current account and postal ISa with them. We have our mortgage and 2 other accounts with them and my daughter has a current account too. The adviser said he would query it after I told him we would move all our accounts and mortgage! Disgraceful!!0 -
Have recently had the same problem, applied online and went in to confirm my identity & the lady at the counter said I'd been rejected for the student account. I've been told to get the credit report and bring it in if it looks OK, then they'll do it in person. I'm guessing my prior application for an Abbey student account (also declined but because I cocked up the application) didn't help.0

Having same problem, posted on another thread. My son has been given an account with Nat West but won't give any overdraft facility. Been turned down flat with other banks from even opening an account ? I have obtained credit reports and it is all clear apart from the searches that the banks have done in trying to open the accounts. Shown credit report to the banks and as you say 'tough computer said no' , can't help , just keep paying in money (from somewhere) and we will trying again in 4/6 months time ? Don't see how anything is going to change in that time.
I been forced to go to relations for financial help
I wonder if Northern Rock do a student account, surely they would welcome new customers0 -

Another Halifax rejection here, too. My husband just got turned down for a student account. He's a mature full-time student (27), works 30+ hrs a week, has a current account with HSBC, a savings account with ING and a couple ISAs. The letter said that his credit rating is too low. That was a bit of a shock. He's never late making payments. Everything is on direct-debit anyway. The credit rating was good enough to get an Amex card a few months ago. He's going to get a copy of his credit report just in case, but I doubt that it'll show anything out of the ordinary.
I'm really fed up with Halifax. I can see how they might reject an 18-year-old with no credit history, but my husband has more than enough in savings to cover any overdraft they could offer him. He's definitely not a high-risk customer.
He's going to NatWest on Monday.0 -
I tried to get a student account with HSBC, and they said no too. Same reasons, low credit score, apparently. Funnily enough, I've managed to get a contract mobile phone within the past week with no problems?
Any ideas why the banks don't seem to like my custom? :mad:0 -
when i applied for mine i had NO credit history, not even an OVERDRAFT! i went with hsbc as their incentive was a free 5 year railcard whereas my bank abbey was offering £20 cash...0

My son has tried to upgrade his Nationwide account so he could have a debit card rather than the cash card he has at the moment. Needless to say he has been saving with them for at least 10 years and has had a cheque account since he was 16, no overdraft, account always in order, never overdrawn.
Again they said his credit scoaring was too low, various excuses like he didnt earn enough - well he is at college and they dont allow them to work more than 16 hours and that is a similar situation with most colleges so this must apply to most 18 year olds.
They also said your credit scoaring depended on how much activity there was on the account. So are you supposed to go along every lunch time and withdraw £10 from the machine and then put it straight back into your account againAt least then it would look like another £240 was being deposited into the account.
So they said to come back in 6 months but by this time he will be opening his student account - with Natwest hopefully.
And needless to say when his savings bond comes up for renewal in about 12 months time it probally wont be another Nationwide bond he takes out.“Create all the happiness you are able to create; remove all the misery you are able to remove. Every day will allow you, --will invite you to add something to the pleasure of others, --or to diminish something of their pains.”0 -
Ironically, Lloyds TSB have no qualms about offering me a credit card with a £1000 limit. Apparently I scored a "3" on Lloyds' internal score, which apparently is fairly good? A few days later I now have a credit card. Any suggestions as to what I should do with it to bump up the credit rating? One I've heard is use it in place of a debit card (exc cash withdrawals) for spending and then pay off in full at the end of the month?
I called HSBC's complaints line and tried to get them to review my application, maybe possibly try and do it manually. But they wouldn't budge, they did all the "computer says no" stuff, i.e. what the computer said was final, and that was all. They said to go and contact Experian regarding the information that was given. I did, and nothing untoward appeared, as I had thought. The searches for HSBC, however, didn't show up.
My Lloyds TSB current account didn't appear either under the accounts section - but the address for that account is now in my halls of residence one.
