Full price then reduced in the sale days after

I ordered some furniture online.
It was delivered 7 days ago.
Today I recieved an email with a link to their sale.
The goods I ordered were reduced by £200
They said I could return the items and order a new set at the new reduced price.
They would not refund me the difference.
Does anyone know what the legal standpoint is when goods are reduced in a sale just after you have bought them at full price?

Ask yourself if you would be willing to pay £200 more if the price had increased.

The legal standpoint is that you are not entitled to the goods at the sale price.

You must have been happy with the price when you ordered and IMO the legal standpoint would be you take up the offer of returning {at your own cost} then re order. The company have done nothing wrong so the choice is yours.
Perhaps in future do not look at any new prices after you buy that way you will never know if the cost has gone up or down from what you paid.

The legal standpoint is that you should receive the goods a little earlier than those who bought them later on.

You could do as they have suggested and return the original order and then reorder at the reduced price.

    But .....

You might be liable for the return postage costs - likely sizeable for furniture.

If you've used it they can deduct an amount (up to 100%) to reflect its reduced value as they would not be able to resell the items as new.

Do you have all the packaging in order to effect the return?

Your contract is for F at price X. Nothing more, nothing less.

I'd say it's actually quite generous of them to tell you that you can return and repurchase at the lower cost, most retailers wouldn't have done any such thing.

Yes. The legal standpoint is that you bought the goods at the pre-sale price.
    That's about it really

The best you can hope for is to email them, express your disappointment to find out about the sale so soon after your purchase, and ask if they'd consider a goodwill gesture. If you're lucky they might send you a gift card / voucher / store credit for some or all of the difference.

wouldnt say it is generous, the OP could return, less return costs and possible deduction in the refund (op didnt say if there would be) wether retailer liked it or not.

probaby not worth the hassle though
