Someone else's Council Tax Bill sent here.

    Hi all,

A council tax bill was sent to my address yesterday.
It was addressed to a name I do not know of, for an address that is on the other side of the country which I have no connection to.

After being on hold for 45 minutes I spoke to someone at the council and told them that the person does not live here and never has done, (I have lived here for a year and a half), the previous owner lived here for 15 years when the property was built. I also know nothing of the property the bill is related to.

I was told to send the letter back with "Addressee not at this property".
I wanted to know why the letter was sent here and how this person was connected with this property and was told that it is confidential.

It looks like a new claim from the end of May 2016.

None of my neighbours recognised the name either.

I have made a copy of the letter and the letter I posted back to the council.

The bill was for about £1300 but there was a 100% discount.

But I am concerned that my address is being highjacked and that in the future other bills will be sent to this address.

I assume the police wont be interested.
Is there anyone that I could contact about this if I get anymore bills, letters or debt collectors at my door?

Why have you opened someone else's letter? Would you be happy if people opened your mail if it was sent to the wrong address?
These are my own views and you should seek advice from your local Benefits Department or CAB.

I open any post that comes to my address. Why wouldn't you?

If you call the police, they may just deliver it to the right person, thats what happened with my moblile bill that went by mistake to my neighbour when he gave it to the police instead of putting it through my door.
The fact that it was a twenty mile round trip to my office to deliver it, explains why we think the police round here don't have too much to do!!

It's not a police matter.. Return to sender and forget

Same here ! If its got my address on it - its opened. I got £50 comp once for complaining that a car insurance company kept writing to a fictional occupier at my address as they never updated their records after I contacted them. My house built and bought from new - so clearly someone lying.

Or maybe they were thinking of moving to the area and put a random address down to see what the premium would be?

I don't open post without my name, I just return it not known at this address. After a while I tried putting 'deceased', but still it comes...
Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.

No lol ! They took out insurance, then had an accident and another insurance company were seeking to claim against them ! So some poor sod got hit by effectively an ' uninsured ' driver and I certainly wasnt going to get a summons and bailiffs coming to my door.

I find it hard to believe only address was showing through and not the name. The council most likely show name and address through the envelope window. I may be wrong.

I find that happens now and then.
    It's nothing , not nothink.

If there is no return address of the back of the envelope then it would need opening to find out the return address, but if a letter is delivered to a name you don't know of and there is a return address on the back of the envelope, what do you do?
Just put it in a letter box or write on the front/back of the envelope "return to sender"?

Not known at this address and let Royal Mail sort it.

Well I sent the letter back and wrote "Addressee not known at this property" and posted it back on the 20th June 2016.

Today I received anther CT bill and this time it is for over £700 relating to the same person and address that I have no connection to.

The letter was dated 27 June 2016.
