UNI fees after split - ex on benefits

Hi All,

Looking for some advice!

Split with ex 18 months ago, our son lives with me, our daughter lives with ex.

Son looking to go Uni now he's finishing his A levels.

I earn too much for any benefits with exception of reduced council tax. Ex on allsorts of benefits.

As son lives with me what are the funding options for Uni? Can he get any help with fees?

This is all a bit of a minefield so far, so any advice would be appreciated!

Unless he is estranged from you your income will be used in the calculations.

Yes as OP has said, your income will be used. You need to hurry though as there's a deadline and i'm fairly certain it's very soon. My daughter applied for hers weeks ago.

The deadline is 9 months after the first day of the academic year for your course.

Like all students, he'll be able to take out a tuition fee loan for his fees and a maintenance loan for him to live on. The grant will be assessed on your household income.

But that's not necessarily the date that the actual course starts. My course starts towards the end of September but for student loan deadline's is the first of September. I fell foul of that a couple of years ago and missed the deadline for getting my fees paid.
Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.

Unless your child is living with your ex, its your income that will be taken into account. I knew of some people of got around this by saying they were living with the parent claiming benefits but i'd think 10 years on they can check that kind of thing.

I would hope that they can. In any event it would be fraudulent to do that.

Here's a calculator which will give an idea of what he will be eligible for based on your salary. It may be that you are on the lower end of the scale and he's still entitled to some of the grant section.

There's a lot of moaning on here about fraud. Looking at it the other way around, why should the son get less financial help than his sister because he chose to live with his Dad and not his Mum? Maybe OP can make up the difference, but what if he genuinely can't? Then what? Just let him suffer in comparison?
