Maintenance grants are still available this year - they'll be scrapped in 2017.

My son was told there are no longer grants for new students starting in September 2016 and onwards.

I'm split from my ex and single. The student finance was means tested on my sole income. He has been approved for a loan but no grant.

No grants for new students? That sucks!

    Save £12k in 2017 / Dec 2017 Travel Cash = £12,400 / £14,000 88.5%[/COLOR]

    House Deposit = £20,500 / £18,000:money:
  • Truly, there are no longer grants for new students commencing from September. Therefore, you need to be prepared.

No grants and accommodation is £124.95 a week. That's for a self catering room with a bathroom and a shared kitchen/living area in uni halls.

His maintenance loan will cover the rent, leaving him hardly anything for food and other course costs, and nothing for clothing, socialising etc. It's not possible to study without getting a job as well these days. Not that that's a bad thing mind but a bit of a worry as he's applied for several jobs but not managed to find one yet.

Unless your child is living with your ex, its your income that will be taken into account. I knew of some people of got around this by saying they were living with the parent claiming benefits but i'd think 10 years on they can check that kind of thing.

Even the child living with the ex will be assessed on his income if he is still paying any maintanence towards her upkeep. Only if the child is estranged from the parent will the income be disregarded.
My ex died and my daughter went to live with her aunt and when it came to obtaining finance for uni it was my income and not her aunts that was assessed.

Students are assessed on the household income of the home where they normally live - that would include a step parent or live in partner. Estrangement is only relevant if you're trying to establish independent student status but they will be assessed on their parents income if they " live with them or depend on them financially".
  • Like all students, he'll be able to take out a tuition fee loan for his fees and a maintenance loan for him to live on. The grant will be assessed on your household income.

sorry didn't read as far as your amendment

Well, not exactly. You didn't state that you were supporting her financially when she was living at the aunt's, which is the crucial thing. Also, "estranged" in this context means rather more than not being supported financially by your parents, you actually have to have no contact with them to be considered estranged.
