Would you spend £200 on a jacket that may or may not last 30 years?

What's it about?

I'm very keen on re-use and recycling so when I saw you could get tshirts, sweatshirts, jackets etc claimed to last 30 years I thought it was a great idea.

The sting in the tail, though, is the cost.

Eg this Tom Cridland jacket starts at £199.

Would you spend £199 on something that may or may not last 30 years?

For comparison, what's the oldest piece of clothing you own that isn't falling apart?
Could you do with a Money Makeover?

I don't ever buy clothes thinking 'will they last 30 years'..... I have bought coats for around £100, but never that amount but if I found something I liked for £200, then yes I would. I have shoes that cost way more and they won't last that long - but I might keep them for show....
Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....

I have a denim jacket costing around the same/similar price (I have bought jackets that only last a few months for £40-£60 so why spend less on things that don't [usually] last? - I'm aiming to keep said jacket 'til death or beyond as an heirloom, and as it's denim and hard wearing i can keep restitching and patching to add character.

I would, and have, spent multiple times that amount on a single item of clothing. How much do you think a pure wool jacket costs?

My oldest item of clothing would be a silk lace dress and bolero which dates to the 1920s.

I wouldn't spend £19.99 on that jacket, let alone £199.00.

And who is Tom Cridland and how long has the company been in business?
    What if they go bust?
    What value the guarantee then?

I tend to buy what I like, rather than how long it's going to last.
I'd consider a leather or sheepskin coat as an investment that will last me many years but not something that appears to be a fashion item.

Why would I want or expect an item of clothing to last 30 years? That is absolutely not my first thought when buying a coat/jacket.

I wouldn't buy that jacket at all regardless of the price.. but yes, I would pay £200 for a decent coat that would last a good few years. I have had a few coats that cost that much, most last about 5 years before looking shabby and needing replacing.

I can neither imagine spending £200 on any one piece of clothing nor imagine wanting to wear something for 30 years (even if I had that long to live).

I have a couple of t-shirts that are over 20 years old, but the oldest in my wardrobe would be an Edwardian Frock Coat. According to the label it is 114 years old and still looks fantastic.

    I wouldn't spend £200 on that jacket, it's awful.

But if I were to spend £200 on something it would be because I like it at this point in time with no expectation that I would still like it just as much in 30 years time.

Oldest thing I have is my grandmother's mink coat, that's about 60 years old. The oldest thing I have that I actually wear is a leather coat, that must be getting on for 20.

I'd love to see that! Can you post a pic up?

I can easily imagine paying £200 for a jacket or coat, but not keeping it for 30 years. My work suits used to cost about that - from an outlet shop! Nowadays, I'm more back room so wear much more casual clothing.

Ditto boots. My wellies cost £140 about five years ago and are still going strong, what an excellent investment, they are called Sealand and they are used daily in winter.

My oldest piece of clothing is a "peasant" style dress I bought in 1977. As I've got older I've put on a few pounds, so I no longer wear it now, but did back in the day.
