Kitchen bin, I have picked stuff up and also caught up other things that were on the worktop, and more than once; glasses, potato peeler, shoe inserts....

You've still got a few hours yet.

They can ask you to pay the excess from your wages as long as you still get paid minimum wages after the deduction so you need to be on higher than minimum wages for any deduction to occur and you have to agree to the deduction.

If you don't wish to pay I would suspect your employment would be in jeopardy and the loss will come out of your final pay which is probably going to come from your holiday pay owed.

You could ask about the insurance. It might cover it and £500 might be the excess. To keep premiums low they tend to have a high excess so small claims are self insured.

If you're going to suffer financial hardship then negotiate a settlement maybe £10 per week for a year which should be okay.

:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p
  • okay - been here so many times..............the weather has been so changeable this last couple of weeks - did you wear a lighter jacket/cardigan the day the keys went missing............. were you going on a night out and using a different handbag - double check - even if you are sure you didn't.
Check the lining of your usual coat - they have a habit of making a hole and sliding through............did you go to the gym and leave them in your gym bag - they will turn up.................

Technically, unless it says they can make deductions for such things in your contract, they can't force you to pay it, and they couldn't legally make deductions from your wages. So you would have to check what your contract says. But as I said before, they might dismiss you. So you may have to suck it up and accept that it is the price for keeping your job.

I thought that was the joke.
  • I would get a group of friends round to look in the house/car top to bottom - they will look in places you wouldn't think of where they may have dropped........or places you DEFINITELY know you didn't put them..........
