Now pouring rain. Good luck for tomorrow redruby and Dumpling, I am sad to think that you feel so left out xI was jumping to conclusions and one of them jumped back0

Hi everyone,
I'm sorry about your family Dumpling, I don't see my 4 brothers but at least they all ignore each other too. When mum died 2 of them showed their true colours as the not very nice people they have become.
We had a really busy weekend. On Saturday DS and fiancee had a garden party to clear out the back half of their garden. Five of her family turned up and we had a very productive day, unfortunately DS broke his toe. We packed him off to A & E about 7pm (they didn't get home till 2am) and as everyone else had left DH and I set to and tidied the house and garden. They have no rear access so everything had to be carried through the house which lft quite a mess behind. It all looked lovely when we left though and they were very appreciative.
Yesterday we went to DD's and I shortened two pairs of curtains for her - why on earth do IKEA make their curtains so long? I'm sure people who can afford houses with ceilings high enough to accommodate them could afford more than a £20 pair of Ikea curtains.
I need to turn my attention to this house now, it's been shamefully neglected.
Have a good day.0 -
Morning everyone - Hope you all had a lovely weekend.
It was a very lazy weekend for me, which thankfully also meant low spend. GF and I finished watching Suits so now we have a huge void in our life. On Saturday night we were treated to a lovely tapas dinner in Glasgow from my Mum and Step-Dad and went home to enjoy some drinks out the back with a fire going in our chimney.
Sunday was Fathers Day, so we drove to visit my Dad in Ayr and stopped by a car showroom as the PCP on my car is up soon. Afterwards we drove home to a lovely Sunday dinner with the family. A thoroughly enjoyable weekend.
Hester - Fingers crossed for your DH.
Dumpling - As you say, you have fantastic friends and they'll be a massive help during tough times. You can't pick your family.
Ruby - Good luck tomorrow.
Have a good day everyone0 -

It is lovely that dh got a father's day card from family. Has he thought of trying BandQ or other places that value older workers?
Builders were due this morning but phoned to say they would be delayed due to dealing with an emergency which is reassuring as I feel they would do the same for me if necessary.

I am supposed to have the electrician coming today to install a new circuit board and get appliances like fridge freezer and double oven working. Right now I have half a kitchen and the chaos keeps moving around the house. I am pleased that the gas hob will light with a match if the electrics are off as that is something I really wanted and it should be lovely once it is finished. The carpets for the bedroom and living room have arrived and look like really good quality for a very good price.
I can't leave the house as there are some deliveries due but once the builders arrive at eleven I can pop to the local shop for rolls, milk and fruit.

Morning, ((((((((((hugs)))))))))) if you need one.
Its OH's birthday, 83, I wish he would remember that sometimes, he acts like an 18 year old!! Nothing special happening, we did not have a roast last night we were too full after the plate of food he got from the over 60's tea party. Will be having roast lamb tonight.
Typically its chucking it down, so no more gardening, and I have shoved the towels in the washer bit its not on, it would take hours to dry them in the dryer, so they can wait for a better day.
Monday clean to do. OH is going to do some more of his jig saw, he has it on a special jig saw board which folds over and holds the jig saw in place. So he will have that on the kitchen table. The board takes a 1000 piece jig saw.
I need to shut myself in the sewing room again, want to try a different way to do the zipper bag I made on Saturday.
The pool of water which had drained away is now reforming, the ground is so wet it cannot take anymore water.
Hester, I hope your husband finds a job, we were lucky the Job Centre kept OH in until he was 65, so we got an extra 5 years on his civil service pension. I can understand your husband wanting to get away from the environment he is currently working in. I felt the same when I was working in the civil service in Scotland. I would never have made it to 60. The building was awful, and because I was not one who went drinking every Friday lunch time I never fitted in, just put my head down and got on with it. The fact that I spoke with an English accent did not go down well either, I do not want to offend anyone but the Scots can be very racist.
Time to get on....have a good day.......0 -
I don't often post here but had a good giggle at your post TA.
Your notion that Cowes and Shanklin are not far apart would seem very strange to Caulkheads (born and bred Islanders)
Indeed, if you were to propose a visit to Shanklin while staying in Cowes they would rally round with offers of torches, blankets, flares and Kendal mint cake.
I have posted this before somewhere but will repeat it for your delectation....
Overheard in a pub in Ryde. Two elderly gentlemen discussing the forthcoming wedding of one of their sons.
Elderly gent 1. "He marrying a local lass then?"
Elderly gent 2. "No. She comes from Seaview."
Seaview is all of about 1 mile away.
Enjoy our lovely island but be prepared to go back in time about 50 years.

I'm going to IoW next Monday, for a week. As I'm now 60 and it's like life was 50 years ago, I'll bring my bucket and spade and sit outside the pub with a bag of crisps and a squash!
Love those stories Monnagran about the localsCarolbee0 -

Indeed my late Ma-in-law considered folk who came from 'back of the Island as almost 'furriners' and as for me who was a Londoner well ..well lets say it took us a long time to get to know each other.
Yet she had in 1932 married a London lad when she worked 'in service' to an MP in Westmister. He was stationed at Chelsea Barracks at the time as he was in the Oxs & Bucks Light infantry. When she came back to Northwood (Cowes) to live they wrote to each other, and he was lucky enough to get a posting to Albany Barracks .
They married at St Johns church at Northwood, and eventually he left the army and they settled in Chelsea for several years until he sadly died at 29 and left her a very young widow of 28 with two small boys of 3 & 2.She returned to the Island to live and bought her house at Northwood outright for £580 with his life insurance money.
She had to struggle a lot to survive as work was even scarcer in 1936. But survive she did and brought her two lads up on buttons and fresh air.Every inch of her large 3/4 acre of garden was cultivated and she grew almost everything they ate. She kept some chickens, and the boys caught rabbits and fished. Not a great deal of help before WW2 for anyone really.
An amazing lady whom I had nothing but the greatest admiration for. She would have loved this site, and I'm sure have thought of everyone today as being very well off in comparison to what she lived on.
A widows pension was very small back then. She eventually remarried during WW2 so things got a little better, but she never lost her frugal ways. The Island is a great place for a holiday, and my DD and family and I go every year for the last fortnight in August.
We prefer the 'back of the island' and stay in and around Chale. We like the beach at Colwell Bay as we can take the dogs with us, and the boys like swimming and crabbing off the rocks. My two DDs spent most of their summer holidays with their Grandma whilst growing up so we all know our way around quite well.
My ma-in-law used to say how great it would be if there were more choice of shops, and now in Newport there is as there is Aldi's and all the big supermarkets available.
Back in the 1970s we would either go to Ryde to Summerfileds once a week, or maybe to Newport.I can remember my OH saying that he remembered when the only set of traffic lights on the Island were in the centre of Newport:rotfl:.
Apart from the horrendous traffic at times in and around Newport the rest of the Island has stayed virtually unspoilt. Cowes Hight street is a look into the past with its small old fashioned shops .But its very nice to go to for a wander.
Hope anyone who goes, enjoys themselves and returns. My Ma-in-law wasn't that keen on the 'overveners, or grockles' as she called the visitors back then, as she said the bus fares always went up during the summer;).
Only 7 weeks until we pack up two cars with 4 lads two dogs and the hamster and trek down to our beloved IoW though
Rain still around at the moment, not a very auspicious start to the british summer
Keep dry chums if you can

Great excitement GERS! A text from GTech this morning to say my upright and multi will be delivered tomorrow! I only ordered them yesterday so that's what I call service! I have also ordered (after much deliberation!) a Hoover 2 in 1 steam cleaner but, though it said next day delivery, I haven't had a definite date yet. I won't know which to play with first!
Monna your comments made me smile! You are lucky to live in such a lovely place. We have visited before as Mr TA's sis lived there for over 30 years. Her and OH retired last year and surprised us all by saying they were going to sell up and retire back up here! Apparently, as beautiful as it is, they never thought of it as "home" and couldn't wait to be back within striking distance of the Dales.
Well the forecast was right, the skies cleared and the sun came out mid
morning but they omitted to tell us about the wind! I came back from town to find a lot of the pots in the back garden had blown over! A good watering seems to have anchored them down!
Have a good afternoon folks xx"If you dream alone it will remain just a dream. But if we all dream together it will become reality"0 -
REDRUBY fingers crossed the interview goes well tomorrow.
The rain here has been torrential and its been so dark and cool. I've even had a candle burning and a mug of hot chocolate !Not very oldstyle but the Dry buddies has had to be used to dry sports kit.
Son has called in Farmfoods for me on his way back from sixth form . So nice easy tea of mini pizzas. Husband has jobs to do on his way back from work so may not get Aldi shop till tomorrow. I don't drive.
Book club later and I have a feeling it could be quite a discussion tonight. Off to text husband shopping list.
Hugs to those who want/ need them.0
