Where is the programs menu in Windows 8.1?

I've reluctantly bought a new laptop but I'm stumped as to where this lies, it was just so easy in XP (from where I have directly come). I've been online (that took 15 minutes. It's now a 4-step process just to get to the menu of connections. Do MS seriously think that getting online is some little-used utility that doesn't deserve its own link?) I'm advised that all you have to do is start typing the program from the start menu, except there's no field there! Do they mean the search box on the next page? I think that must be just for apps because I definitely installed the Unetbootn program yesterday and actually used it (or could have done if it had recognized the the same drive letter for my USB stick as 'My Computer' did). I just start typing 'un' and it comes up as 'no apps match your search'.
Is it W10 that has revived the start button? If so, I'll upgrade to that as I like a menu from which to choose .

3 options.
1. upgrade to Windows10
2. install Classic Shell
3. The fastest way to get to the Apps screen (i.e. All Programs menu) is to use the keyboard shortcut Win to get to Start screen, and then Ctrl + Tab. Ctrl + Tab again to get back to Start screen. Use Esc to get back to last used window, Win + D to get to desktop.0 -
If you want the XP experience, you could install a free program called Classic Shell, which will give you back the programs menu, start button, control panel, etc.

I've used it on 8 and 8.1, and am currently using it in Win 10.
EDIT. Beaten to it.0 -
That accidentally put me onto the menu to the right of 'Apps', which I didn't know existed! Most of the missed programs are there, including Trusteer which I installed...but still no sign of Unetbootn.grumpycrab wrote: »and then Ctrl + Tab.
But the explanation of what it actually is and how to install it has persuaded me to try it. Is it easily reversible?Bedsit_Bob wrote: »

Have you tried just pressing the Windows button and starting to type the first few characters of the application's name?Kernel_Sanders wrote: »I'm advised that all you have to do is start typing the program from the start menu, except there's no field there! If you are on W8.1 then it's a no brainer to move to W10Science isn't exact, it's only confidence within limits.0

as several people have said install classic shell, its superb. full customisation of your start menu. I stick it on for people when ever I fix a computer and nobody wants it removed. A menu that lets you choose, whatever next.Mr Generous - Landlord for more than 10 years. Generous? - Possibly but sarcastic more likely.0

It still amazes me how someone can get something new and just expect the knowledge to appear in their heads without researching how to use it.Kernel_Sanders wrote: »No, but I have done now! That's pretty cool, but how many other people are missing out because they don't realize that you can type in a field they can't see?Drinking Rum before 10am makes you
