Mains door bell

I'm fed up with unreliable feeble sounding electronic wireless door bells. I'm also fed up with having to unplug them to plug in where I happen to be working. Can anyone recommend a traditional loud mains door bell ( not a ding dong one ).We live in a long thin Victorian semi, and the sound needs to travel a long way. Thank you.

    I like knockers.

What? No, seriously, knockers are loud, need no power, are super-reliable

I bought a battery operated wireless doorbell from Morrisons a couple of months ago. It's very loud and has a choice of sounds including a traditional phone ringing, ding dong, and the Yellow Rose of Texas! It was only £6 and great value.

Our previous house had a wind up doorbell and it was brilliant! It was a long thin Victorian terrace and I could hear it in the fourth room (kitchen!)

They've got some on Amazon but they're quite pricey.

I think when our current battery one dies I'll get a decent wind up one to replace it. They need to be door mounted though, so would be an issue if you've not got a wooden door.

  • Thank you for your replies. I've tried a knocker and an old school type bell with no success. The other hate I forgot to mention with the wireless ones is that they go off at odd times when no-one's there including the middle of the night, and now for some reason all I get is static! I had thought of a wind up one, but it's a UPVC door and it's on a porch I think I'll contact a wind up company, and see what they say.

I have a bag full of freidland mains door bells somewhere, bells, transformers and pushes I think. I used to get my daughter to stick em on ebay now and again. They don't sell for much, I can get her to stick a couple on if your interested.

  • Thank you Mr Generous! If you could get your daughter to put them up on ebay, I'll keep an eye open for them.
Chrisw, Kingfisherblue, thank you for your thoughts, but it doesn't solve the problem of the door bell ringing in the middle of the night which is a bit disconserting!

I fitted one of these mains powered bells at my (elderly) parents' place

It looks traditional and they can hear it within a 1/4-mile radius :)
