Personally I much prefer going a mile or so out from the city centre when I'm staying in Amsterdam. The city centre can be a bit full on and full of British drunks who can't handle their weed!

The last couple of times we've stayed in a nice area called de pijp, which is only less than half an hour walk from dam square, but there are plenty of trams, if you don't like walking. There are are loads of nice restaurants and bars.

PS Most of the good stuff (unless you're going with the sheer intention of smoking!) is outwith the direct city centre of Amsterdam.

It's a really beautiful city and there is so much more than the coffee shops and red light district.

The last two times I've been I've only really spent 1/2 a day each time in the city centre.

Trams are really easy to navigate, they have electric boards which display the upcoming stops, and all the drivers speak English, and are always happy to help if you have any queries.

Get a good guide book and plan your trip before you go, rather than wandering aimlessly around the city centre!

Look at Hotel Vondel, but the basement rooms get poor reviews so avoid them. Close to museums and start of boat cruises, walkable to city centre.
