Any physical object can be copied but the unique ones like ABS are not going to be copiable to most people. If you are worried about people who have access to the type of equipment that could fabricate an ABS key from photo or similar, then you need a combination of a physical lock and an electronic lock. There is no other way around that.

There are easier way to get in than forging keys or smashing anti pick/anti bump/ anti drill or anti whatever euros.

We all forget the scramble up the drain pipe round the back, take 5 roof tiles of and the jobs a "goodun". Park a white van outside and it's the roofer that cops it.

Of the two times we've been broken in to, the first time they crow-barred open a window we'd left on the crack, the second time they forced open the french doors.

Honestly the chances of someone getting in through copying keys, or otherwise messing about with locks must be so small it's not worth worrying about.

Where would you ever leave your keys, together with your address, to give someone the opportunity to copy them then burgle you?

If you loose your bag/get pickpocketed they'll have the keys anyway and you'd then change the lock.

So they can be copied but it's all down to the integrity of the shop whether they ask for the code or not?

The shops where I asked could only do them with the code, they were obviously just going to apply to Yale which I could do myself.

Whether a decent locksmith rather than a key cutter could?, I don't know.

Please don't think that doesn't happen because it does, ask anyone whose car keys have been taken from a bag, the cars gone before you get home as there's usually enough info, or consider the fact that they know where you live.

If you keep the little plastic keyfob tag on your house keys in your handbag with all the other paraphernalia that every woman keeps in there, including address details, then there is every possibility that the code could be pinched without you noticing it.

But we're talking about house keys, not car keys.

If they've just stolen your car keys how does that facilitate them copying your house keys and getting into your house?

If they have taken your car keys and your house keys why would they need to copy them? They already have them. And surely if you'd had your house keys stolen you would change the lock.

Or are you saying that someone is going to steal your car keys, steal your house keys, steal your address info, steal the car, get the keys copied, then put them back in your bag/pocket without you noticing a thing?

When we work in hospitals we fit a lot of controlled drugs cupboards. These come with blanks and a card for the cutting of additional keys. When I was younger I had a job in tool company which also cut keys. I was trained to cut keys and on occasion you would get security keys. The only thing stopping us from cutting them was our own knowledge that we weren't supposed to. We once had some guys come in from one of the military barracks who seemed a bit put out when we wouldn't cut them without authorization. 2 weeks later had a letter from the MOD commending us for doing so.

  • The thing is they are snapping euro locks to break in.

Not if you've got a decent cylinder, but my point was that key copying doesn't sound like a very realistic threat to me.

I recently changed mine to a stronger cylinder that is meant to be snap/bump proof. The cylinder itself feels much stronger and the key is also not so easy to replicate.Yale-Superior-chrome-and-Brass-1-star_xlrg.jpg
I thought the issue with copying the keys was not as much someone would copy the physical key but that they can jam a dummy key inside the lock and force it open the lock!
Though I am a bit suss as you can order spare keys online based on the code! Also, a strong cylinder is only safe if the lock on the door is robust!

Me neither, it's all a bit 'too much American TV'.

The only realistic scenario that I've come up with so far where someone would have the opportunity to copy your keys without you knowing and have access to your address would be if you took your car to the garage/used valet parking and were stupid enough to give them your house keys as well.

I suppose if you live in rented accommodation there could be several copies of the key in circulation from previous tenants/landlord, but then you'd just change the cylinder and put the original one back when you move out.
