Go in then, do please explain how a stuck EGR reduces cylinder pressure.

why dont you explain why an open egr will not cause starting issues rather than being the person as well as the other poster who wants to strip posts down to ridicule people when they are trying to help

im not a mechanic you obviously are

No, I'm not, actually. I just understand not to make categorical statements of fact when I don't know I'm right. Unlike you, who says 'I'm not a mechanic', but has made a prior statement that an open EGR will cause a loss of compression.

Another post picked you up on that, you got sarcastic. I have no particular love for arcon5, but he is in the right here.

A stuck open EGR may cause starting issues, but, newsflash, THAT'S NOT WHAT YOU SAID.

Guys/Gals.... thanks for ALL info. As a total 'non-teccy' in relation to cars, everybit of info I can glean will I hope a)-fix car (!), b)-get it done more cheaply! I appreciate as an open forum all views can be given but as I said not being mechanically minded its a massive learning curve for me reading all the replies. Sorry for my late reply, I don't think I mentioned but I fell off a chair in my house (listed building-not even flooring-heaven forbid i walk 10 yards to loft for a step ladder!) a week ago & as a stubborn...ahem (!) middle aged guy (who thinks hes 21!) I've avoided hospital until today....good news is my black eye is better....left knee is better but have severely bruised right shoulder (which worried me a lot as when a lot younger it dislocated 4 times!) which is urber painfull & 1 cracked rib....painkillers & whisky I feel ...lol! Again-appreciate ALL who have taken time to help. Will update in a day or so.

Does anyone have any idea how much an EGR valve would be to blank off (Of course I'll get fault code checked before I do this). Again-thanks for your time & trouble. Can't help thinking if I was 20 a fall from a chair would be no issue lol (!).

Well, 2 weeks ago car 'suddenly' started working fine? Either starts 1st/2nd time...VERY occaisionaly 3 goes (without the 'easystart' spray)to be expected as mentioned earlier i have 3 working glo plugs-the 4th is wedged in & too risky to remove), only thing I;ve done is add some halfords injector clean to 1/4 tank diesel & repeated this. Weird???

The actual warning light that is now off is described below....

    Malfunction warning light

The Corsa malfunction warning light will illuminate when the ignition is switched and extinguish shortly afterwards as normal. If the light illuminates when the engine is running, there is an issue with emission control. The permitted gas emission are being exceeded. If the light flashes yellow whilst the engine is running, catalytic converter damage may be caused. Ease off the accelerator and seek assistance from a workshop immediately.

    Weird weird weird!

I had my EGR valve blanked off and the engine re-mapped to forget about it.

Better performance, no more worries about it blocking, doesn't affect emissions either. Makes me wonder why engines had them to begin with!

Cars already been remapped-performence is great! On a Corsa 1.3cdti the EGR valve is apparently behind the engine block & hard to get too-hence around 3 hours labour-had 1 quote for £160 to blank it off-guy said wouldn't affect the mapping/perfrmance at all. Apparently the ECU on a Corsa can't be altered to forget the EGR? Don't have the cash at the moment but will ring round a bit.
