Thanks guys! So cerainly looks like the EGR valve is causing the main starting issues.....sounds like an old man coughing deprived of fags lol (!). Will get to a garage & update later in the week. Your help is much appreciated.

You say it's not in limp mode, which is good. However the last thing you want is to be driving on a motorway and either the car to go in to limp mode or die altogether. This would be potentially dangerous on a motorway, especially if in the outside lane! Unless on the M25, in which case you won't notice the limp mode ;)

Op says NOT in limp mode.
Although struggling to start then starts perfectly after a spray doesn't scream egr to me. If it was sticking open youd see running issues also

I know, which is why I said "You say it's not in limp mode, which is good. However the last thing you want is to be driving on a motorway and either the car to go in to limp mode or die altogether..."

Just because it's not in limp mode, doesn't mean it won't revert to this at some point, especially given the exact fault has yet to diagnosed.

What on earth on you smoking!!! Stuck egr doesn't cause compression loss!! It's just compressing the wrong thing.

Also there shouldn't be oil in the cylinder above rings anyway so should be anything to rub off! Also easy start atomises very well.

Easy start is fine op if used carefully and conservatively. Don't use it too much or too often!!!!

    its you thats smoking
obviously you are using too much easy start on your cornflakes

Go in then, do please explain how a stuck EGR reduces cylinder pressure.
