hadecs 3 speed camera - M1 Smart motorway plus viewing licence online query?

Hello

I have (probably) a very stupid question to ask :o - Last night i was travelling home on the M1 and passed through the "smart motorway" section where there were either 50 mph or 40mph in operation. I stayed within said limits through several gantries until i came to the last one which was switched off ( and no lines on the road either ). I picked up speed to around 65 mph and then up in front several flashes went off - this was from a HADECS 3 camera which was on the opposite lane ( and looked like blackpool illuminations when it went off )

Other info - there was a large stretch of road in front with quite a number of cars (some of which were clearly flooring it -i would guess at 90 mph)

Questions are - Are the camera's front facing? Do they activate when someone passes? Or is it when you approach the camera? Is there a set distance before its activated? Do the lines on the road matter?

The reason i ask is because i am now paranoid that i am going to get a fine for doing 65 mph just after the zone whereby a restricted speed was in operation. I know this is probably some paranoia and i am now questioning whether the last section of signs were off even though i remember thinking at the time " oh this set are not on" :o - it doesnt help reading posts on forums with some people saying they got fined for doing 54mph in a 50mph zone. :(

second query is - when you log onto check points on your license online - is this likely to update before i receive a letter in the post ( if i do that is ).

    2) I don't believe you can get points until you receive and respond to the NIP.

Exactly. They can't take any action on the speeding offence as at present they don't know who was driving.

Even when you have replied naming yourself, they can't simply put points on your licence until either you have accepted a fixed penalty offer or been convicted in court.

Thanks for the replies - didnt realise that points were applied when you admit the charge.

I was some way off the camera when it actually went off - there mus t have been at least 20 cars in a "group" who were before me , and as i said at least one guy absolutely whizzed past me at some speed. When the first flashes went off - the cars in front were a sea of brake lights although i suspect they were far too close so may also get fined/prosecuted. I think what has made me a bit paranoid was because the camera flashed just as i reached 65mph :o and i started questioning whether i should be at that speed. Feel stupid really :o

    Hi Rainbowfairydust,

If you were caught, you should first receive a Notice of Intended Prosecution (NIP) assuming the address on your V5C registration document is up to date. The NIP will direct you to provide the driver's details before any action is taken.

If you are still worried and want expert advice and reassurance, you may want to head over to the Pepipoo forums and read the advice, or perhaps post a query there:

You want the "Speeding and Other Criminal Offences" forum.

    Hope this helps

obviously not an official but this would make sense going off yesterdays scenario. The penultimate gantry sign read as 50mph - when the flashes went off yesterday , i thought it was set at 70mph (or around that ) as i assumed that the highways agency would have expected ( and rightly assumed ) people to start picking up speed after the gantry that read 50mph.

If the last sign said 50 then the speed limit is 50 until you get another sign, either another limit or a national limit sign.
