My latest discovery is Tesco's no added sugar muesli, which is very tasty (dried fruits, seeds and nuts) and doesn't go soggy when you add milk.

The muesli refer to her is one with added dried red fruits and apples, but yesterday, it was not on the shelves in our local (Extra) store.

Today I looked online to find it's 'not currently available' , so rang to ask if it was discontinued or out of stock and the lady said the only way to find out was to call my local store, who will have details.

Store landlines automatically put you through to a general call centre, if phones aren't answered, and the lady there said there is no such listing on the system, suggesting I call in at the store to ask a provisions manger to find out whether the product will be restocked.

I have a feeling it won't be, but the alternative available, which is Quaker's no added sugar muesli with fruit, is horrid and has much more natural sugar content.

It is like eating soggy cardboard with a the metallic aftertaste of strong dried vine fruits. Yuck; one for the bin and a waste of money.
  • I think the probable answer is that it tastes like bits of wood unless something (namely sugar) is added to it to make it palatable!

A lot of muesli does but the Tesco one was a real surprise; crispy and you can actually taste individual favours of the fruits, nuts and seeds. You can only taste the metallic raisins in the Quaker stuff, no taste of the miniscule bits of strawberry or oats.

I was told by the diabetic nurse no to:

    Special K
    All Bran

    Yes:

    Weetabix(own brand stuff is fine)

Bran Flakes(own brand stuff is fine)

Porridge (plain no extra honey etc added)

    Only three eggs a week

I can't for the life of me think of a reason why you would only have 3 eggs a week. Surely that is incorrect?

What the diabetes nurse should've said was - try the cereal and see how it affects your sugar levels - but they're not trained to say that so they blurt out the rubbish they have. Steps down off soapbox.

Eggs are perfect for diabetes and I eat more like 3 a day (although not every single day).

Breakfast cereals on the other hand send my sugars extremely high and I don't touch them anymore.

The comment on Special K may depend on the date. 7 Years ago,I was told, by an NHS dietician, that this product was fine, but since then the product has changed, adding extra grain types but greatly increasing added sugar (by 'customer request', Kellogg told me).It is horribly sweet and I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole.

There used to be a suggestion that too many eggs were bad for you, (because of cholesterol intake?), but after recent research , the powers that be changed their minds.

I don't test my sugars , since those on diet and exercise were denied free strips and lancets, so it's down to HbA1cs, but diet gets harder as any suitable products seem short lived, as the great British public demands its sugar fix.

Next , they'll stop stocking Irish Diet Yoghurts, which have no added sugar and are fat free.
