respray after scrape

  • I'm seriously hoping I never find myself in the OPs position. The factory paint job on my car is shocking (from an orange peel perspective) and I'm not sure any bodyshop would be able to match the finish on a resprayed pannel - any self respecting repairer would probably be horrified to paint so badly.

I've had bodywork done by main dealers (company car so no option) and bodywork done by my local specialist bodyshop.

    No comparison.

    Local bodyshop: Completely invisible repair.
Main Dealer: Laughably poor work that had to be redone.

Main dealers often subby work out to back street painters as they rarely have the space and resources for their own large bodyshop - nor is it their field of expertise for that matter - and then add their margin on top.

I've no issues with small indies - in fact the guy i normally use is a one man band but brilliant at his work, however unless i've actually seen the work being done i wouldnt rely on someone elses judgement (as the O/P is being asked to do by the farmer) as there too many botch up cheap job merchants out there.

Don't most main dealers outsource bodywork and paint repairs to local bodyshops anyway?

    Yes, they do.

Hence why i never mentioned taking the car to a main dealer. There are many body shops out there that are manufacturer approved and thats where i'd be taking it.

Our local dealer group here has a manufacturer approved standalone bodyshop, approved by Porsche, Merc, BMW, VW etc. THATS where i'd take my car if it was to be repaired to manufacturer spec.

I know for a fact if i took my car to the VW dealer of the same dealer group they wouldnt take it to their own bodyshop but subby it out to a backstreet garage as there is more profit for them as the VW dealer adding a margin on, than giving it to another profit centre even if its within the same group

The local Kia group sent me to the local bodyshop (not a small one though) and its done direct through them. I know of a local shop that specialises in classic cars/bikes so should get a good finish from then.

I thought so. I've never seen any room to paint at any main dealer I've been to. Not to say that some don't do it of course.

4)As wife had the ding do I have to declare it or her.
As long as she remains a named driver then you declare it as part of her history

(If you intend declaring this then she also needs to inform her own insurer)

maybe the O/P should trawl around a few scrappies to find a second hand one? OR alternatively the person who cause the accident should return the car to pre accident condition for the O/P?

The pre accident vehicle would not have had a brand new tail light. Getting one from a scrappie may result in a better return to pre-accident state.

It is his employer you should have contacted in the first place. If accident in the course of his work employer liable.
