    morning all

This pic is so very true. The kids on the right will have no childhood memories to look back on.

My three were probably the very last to have an old fashioned childhood, I dug my heels in and they were the very last to get any new tech.
Eldest son finally got a Gameboy after his SATS so he would have been 11. The first ipods we got were green ones I got with Boots points so that must have been when they were in their teens. We had VHS but didn't get a DVD player until very late and for the first year all we had was one film, Ice Age that I'd won. We had a home computer and eventually lap tops but as we were on dial up and on an even slower speed than now it wasn't used for endless you tube and film watching, mainly school work. Eldest child got her first phone at 14 I think.
My gang went on every school outing possible and did scouts, guides, brownies, cubs, beavers, and then all went onto to be young leaders - all before the time when every child had a mobile and became problematic.

When we went anywhere in the car it was always with a set of books to read or puzzle books or some sort of toy but mostly the car was a good place for conversations, catching up on the day - kids now get tablet type things put into their hands to amuse them, even when the families are eating out there is a child in the corner playing on a tablet ...

Rant over, who started me off :rotfl:

I totally agree. My kids did have tech but were more interested in playing outside with their mates. I watched a programme about how kids were turning into couch potatoes and I swore I would ask them if they were such if I could keep them still long enough to ask them :rotfl::rotfl:

We used to play I spy in the car, or count the yellow cars etc, or like you take books if it was a long journey, or those colouring desks you could get.

We babysat through bedtime for the first time over Christmas and were told to turn the TV on with a specific DVD on when they went to bed, they were not interested in being read to :( We always read to our kids. And they have a DVD set up in the car and use it for even the shortest journeys :( It is not a childhood as I recall it.

Mind you, when we have our grandson after school he literally runs into the lounge to select the game we are going to play. He used to beg for the TV or a computer or tablet, but none of those things are allowed when he is around, we sit and play a proper game like snakes and ladders or frustration or jenga :D

I saw something awful once, and keep seeing it these days. The parent sitting on a seat in a playground with the child racing around playing and shouting look at me mum, the mum shouting back I am watching but continuing to play on the phone. I caught a look of utter disappointment on the face of one child when they looked up and saw mum giving more attention to that phone :(

I remember the 'eye spy' books ..I had 1 and use to fill it in pencil then rub it out and start again if I went on another journey in the car .....but that was only probably once or twice a year if I was lucky....then I suffered from travel sickness:eek::eek: so just as well I didn't go far

    Morning all.
My sister is recovering from her op and luckily they didnt have to take any bone from her hip. However she is 3 days post op and has been fighting a fever for the last 36 hours. Doctors put ice packs in her groin last night to get it down and dr came at 7.30 to check on her this morning as they are worried about the infection ( if there is one getting to her wound) My brother and sister in law are there for a few days but unfortunately both have stinking colds so she has told them not to visit today and they are coming home tommorow. She is also having lots of friends visit so I told her to tell the nurse to restrict her visits. She just needs to rest. Bit worrying. If I wasnt going to London babysitting next week I would go for a few days.

On that subject of London I will be in East Dulwich for three days next week anyone live near?

My daughters brother and sister in law bought their 4,6,7, year old daughters an Ipad each last Xmas. Her parents in law are very generous and are giving their son's money now when they need it rather than when they are gone. They gave each son £1000.00 befire Xmas and the other brother spent it on the Ipads and my daughter and her husband spent it on a new shed and fence! Funnily enough the eldest girl was asked what her favourite Xmas present was and she said her dolly!
Funnily enough when I look after my 8 month old baby grandaughter if I pick up my phone or laptop she always reached for it.
My children always had a book to read on journeys in the car but my son read the most so much so that my daughter knows her way around our area so much better then her brother cause he never looked up from his book. He is 33 now and usually has 3 books on the go at once.
