Is it custard??
Apparently not, as my dad said 'or we could just have custard if that's easier' (I suspect my mum wouldn't approve!)Serendipitious wrote: »It is a simple roux sauce.
That's what I thought, but it's sweet, so is it a plain white roux sauce with added sugar?0 -

Just popping back in as I need some advice re. Christmass puddings. My parents insist they usually have a sweet white sauce with it, not brandy or rum sauce, but it doesn't seem to exist in the shops! Has anyone else heard of it? I don't eat puddings containing dried fruit as a general rule so I'm unsure. My dad reckoned it was like a normal white sauce but with added sugar, but he is not known for his cooking skills so I have my doubts...
It is easy to make
1 OZ CORNFLOUR
2 OZ SUGAR
1 OR 2 TEASPOONS VANILLA EXTRACT
1 PINT OF MILK
JUST BLEND THE CORNFLOUR WITH A LITTLE COLD MILK, THEN ADD SUGAR AND EXTRACT, BOIL THE REST OF THE MILK,THEN ADD IT TOO THE CORNFLOUR PASTE, MAKE SURE YOU KEEP STIRRING OTHERWISE IT WILL GO ALL LUMPY, THEN PUT IT BACK ON THE HEAT AND SIMMER FOR A ABOUT 5MINS, YOU CAN MAKE CHOCOLATE SAUCE THE SAME WAY JUST ADD COCOA TO THE CORNFLOUR
Or you could just buy

Thanks both, much appreciated! This forum is a godsend
I'll have the ingredients in the cupboard anyway so I might see how I feel on the day, if I can be bothered or not after doing the dinner. It may end up being custard or pouring cream otherwise, especially as I won't be eating it! :rotfl:0 -
