I took the plunge while in town today and took Little Anon into NWide to open an account (11-18 they can get a current account with a debit card :)) - there is an hour of my life I will not get back . You have to make an appointment and are then directed into a room where you then have a meeting with an advisor ... by video link ... where they read out all sorts (that you could quite easily not read yourself :D) and they then complete the application form online on another screen in front of you.

I understand having to provide ID, but really ...? Who thinks up these processes in this day and age? In the feedback survey at the end one of the questions they ask is whether you would like to see this service accessible at home - yes, but I would much rather just complete the blinking form myself and save everyone some time :p.

Looks like I won't do the same with San as they have reduced the interest today ... typical!

Speaking from a work perspective, I wish all bank accounts were hard to get to be honest, and that no accounts could be opened online for example. Only because day after day I deal with victims of fraud who assume that because they can provide you with the bank account details of the "suspect", thats its really easy for the police to trace them. Except it isn't, because a lot of the time they use dodgy details to open accounts or false identities, then of course disappear into the ether. And then the police get blamed for not doing their job properly. :( Oh, and then of course there is the assumption that banks just willingly hand over information, which they don't (and neither do lots of other companies). Its actually quite a lot of hard work getting financial details, a lot of the time applying for court orders which take forever and you're then waiting on a judge to decide what kind of day they're having as to whether they will authorise them, or whether they want to ask you every kind of question under the sun before they go ahead!

From a personal perspective I know its a pain in the bum though, I had the same when opening accounts with my kids, although one bank was definitely worse than the other. But the last thing kids want to do is sit there either with a real life person of via video link and go through a load of boring banking questions! :rotfl:
