I invested in some slug traps from EBay recentley £5 for 3. I just put some beer in them and they catch no end of slugs and snails for a 2 metre radius around each trap. It's pretty gross having to empty them but I tip in a nappy sack and just don't look. I am lucky I have a client that gives us lots of free beer so it costs me nada to keep them stocked up but use a cheap beer or some dregs from your leftover cans, that should do the trick.

This thread is very funny - my OH is a really keen gardener and slugs and snails are the bane of his life. My 7 year oldson got some night vision glasses for a birthday pressie last year. Now, a common sight is my Oh, wine glass in hand, walking round the garden at night, with the goggles on and a huge pot of salt. Too funny. My son will always stamp on snails, infact when he was in reception they had some large African snails as pets and he wanted to stamp or salt those too! Our neighbour prefers chopping slugs in half with the scissors.
A snail or slug in the front garden gets the road treatment. I read once about someone who was so fed up with snails he threw them over the fence every night into some waste land at the end of his garden but he had a sneaky feeling they werre coming back. So, before he threw them he put one tiny dab of nail varnish on the shell. He kept finding nail -varnished snails back in his garden, so he would put another tiny dab or nail varnish on and throw them again. One snail got up to five spots!
Would love to know the name of the book about 50 ways to kill a slug - it would make an excellent pressie for OH.

the plastic bottle traps seem to work for us - but perhaps the most effective was when I got fed up with slug pellets and left the slugs to it - then after a bit Mr Hedgehog started visiting at night and eating all our slugs!

My friend swears by sacrificing a hosta - plant a hosta near any plants you want to protect and the slugs will eat the hosta instead. Bit rough on the hosta though!

Sorry to say this ....BUT the only way to deal with slugs is to wallop them with the rake or hoe!!!

go out first thing with the garden implement and you will be shocked at the amount of them...... After the first few dozen you wont care!!

humane option ...... pick them up and put in a pail and drive to the hills and empty ( or throw over garden fence!!!!!).

    SLUGS CAN FLY!!!!!!!!!

Throw them over the fence :rotfl:

The book is actually called "50 Ways to Kill a Slug" and is written by Sarah Ford. The RRP on the back is £4.99 but I picked up a copy for 50p from The Works. (Cheapy bookshop)
