My favourite and most reliable method is collecting them up by night, with aid of torch

I saw a slug collector advertised for sale in a gardening magazine. It was a long pole with a scoop on the end and... this is the best bit, a 'spotlight' torch attached to the handle :rotfl:

You might be able to make one out of a garden cane or a bit of wood, a scoop (like the washing powder scoops you get in big boxes of powder) well taped and tied onto the bottom and a small torch attached to the cane/bit of wood.

It would mean you could pick them off without having to touch them (yuk)

Would second the egg shells tip, and would also add that crushed up sea shells are effective too, and look nicer than egg shells. :)

I don't mind letting the slugs have their share in the garden but when slugs slide under the kitchen door and I tread on them first thing in the morning when I want my first cup of tea - then it's war!!
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!

eeewww.. this is going to sound so gross - but a few months ago I had to move into my parents spare room for a while. They have real problems with damp and the room I was in has a back door in it (weird I know) in the night all the slugs would come in through the gap under the door - get up scramble for the lightbulb - squish, squish DISGUSTING!
Nice of them to bail me out but safe to say I found the means to move out VERY quickly! ;)
I've made my debts bite-size too depressing to look at all at once so am handling them one at a time - first up Graduate Loan £1720 paid off! only £280 to go!!!
Money to raise for tuition fees: £3000
When you get to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on!!

Picked up this book in the library - 50 ways to kill a slug. Apparently they live for YEARS. I might type out some tips if anyone is interested?

Eeeuuuw! I'm not that hardy - I have to wear big gardening gloves! I HATE it when I have to handle a slug without them!! I'm not even great at handling worms, which I think are cute (and a good friend to the gardener)...they still feel horrible!!
  • One of the gardening programmes the other week suggested using the copper washing up pad thingys.. know the ones i mean? i have unravelled them and wrapped the twine around my pots... all seems ok since :)

Just one more thought, for anyone who would like to be kind to slugs & snails by hoiking them over the garden fence...
did you know they apparently have a great homing instinct? I forget how far it is that they can find their way home from, but knowing that made me more determined to become less squeamish about finishing them off. I still cant bear to look, though)

Persuade your two year old son to find them, put them on the patio and stamp on them. The same technique works for snails and the sound is more satisfying.

    Just remember:

    - Don't let him do it near any clean windows;
    - Take his shoes off before he goes back in the house.
