But what you are missing is that Asda do sell decent glasses, they just charge an awful lot less than other opticians (including Tesco).
Asda include in the price thin lenses if your prescription needs them. They do this on a sliding scale so if your prescription is quite mild you get normal lenses, up to the thinnest for the highest prescriptions - http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showpost.php?p=26443209&postcount=136
Feel free to spend five hundred quid on a pair of glasses, but you are only fooling yourself if you think they are better than a fifty pound pair from Asda.
And I speak from experience of someone with terrible eyesight who has been wearing glasses for my whole life, and have tried all types of opticians over the years - cheap, expensive, high street chains, independent, etc.
I have also worn glasses since the age of 4 so nearly 50 years.
I have also has glasses from a few different independent opticians as well as the likes of glasses direct from the internet.
By far the best 2 pairs I have ever worn came from an independent store.
Yes they cost more but are tailored to fit rather than off the shelf frames.
I also have the thinnest lens possible made. There are bog standard thin and there are really thin.0 -

I agree, although I'm not generally an Asda shopper I found their optical service very good. The optometrist was one of the best that I've seen (I've been a glass wearer for 50 years) and I got 3 pairs in two different prescriptions for under £200.0 -
Yes, we do not use Asda for normal shopping as they are not near, we get our eyes tested at a local optician and take the prescription to Asda, worth the journey for the saving.0

So 1.70 ASPH lenses are bog standard thin. Really?
But feel free to carry on paying hundreds of pounds if you perceive that you are getting something better.knightstyle wrote: »Yes, we do not use Asda for normal shopping as they are not near, we get our eyes tested at a local optician and take the prescription to Asda, worth the journey for the saving.
Although you can do that, I think it is always better to get the sight test done at the same place as you are buying the glasses, particularly if it is a more complex prescription (e.g. varifocals).
That way if there is any problem and you are not happy, you don't end up with each blaming the other.0 -
Another vote for Asda, prob best if many people still keep overpaying though to keep the competition going0

I'm so pleased to read the posts praising Asda, as I've just had my test and need new glasses. I've been a customer of Specsavers for years but the quality of their frames has fallen as the prices have risen, so have decided to give Asda a try, even though it means quite a journey.0 -
