Tesco Opticians

Hi - does anyone know where I might stand with this.

On 14th May I ordered two pairs of glasses (buy one get one free) from Tesco Opticians. Total price was £519, as the first pair were expensive frames and I had to pay an extra £90 for the thinning on the second pair. They are both varifocal.

The 'first' pair (the more expensive Oakley ones) have not yet arrived. Was told at first there was a chip on the lens and they had to be returned, then the story changed to the anti glare coating not taking properly to the lens and having to be redone.

I've had the 'second' pair for a couple of weeks now and I just don't like them. They are heavy and just keep sliding down my face, and they leave deep marks when I've been wearing them.

Can I cancel the order and return the second pair for a full refund? I cannot work out what their returns policy is.

They also did not take into account my complex prescription NHS voucher so I was overcharged by about £30 or so.

  • I was told that there is a 90 refund policy on varififocals if you find you cannot get on with them. However, I think that would mean returning them both as the second pair was essentially free.

That's fine, as long as the first pair actually turn up within 90 days...

If the first pair are fine I may decide to keep them, and just return the free pair (which effectively cost me £90) but I am just getting pretty fed up with waiting.

if they are rubbing your nose and sliding down your face they probably need adjusting.
Never yet had a pair that fitted perfect from new without adjusting.

I took them back to be adjusted about a week after I got them. They are a bit better but not much.

then go back again. I personally wont use a high street optician as you better after sales service from an Independent shop.

Pop back in and ensure they are fitted correctly, any decent optician should be able to look at where they are ill fitting and adjust accordingly.

I also paid around £500 for a pair of varifocals a couple of months ago but my glasses were ready in under a week.
    Chase them up ;)

That seems expensive, I am using Asda glasses, £99 for two pairs varifocals, one tinted and these weren't the cheapest.
Took two weeks to come which seemed a long time.

If your eyesight was as bad as my eyesight is you would appreciate getting a decent pair ;)
Decent glasses are akin to a decent mattress or sofa.

    Just my opinion tho.....

I chose expensive frames and I have a complex prescription, so I had to pay for the thinnest lenses. I wanted a tinted pair but they couldn't tint the thinnest lens.

I've chased them every week without much luck.

But what you are missing is that Asda do sell decent glasses, they just charge an awful lot less than other opticians (including Tesco).

Asda include in the price thin lenses if your prescription needs them. They do this on a sliding scale so if your prescription is quite mild you get normal lenses, up to the thinnest for the highest prescriptions - http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showpost.php?p=26443209&postcount=136

Feel free to spend five hundred quid on a pair of glasses, but you are only fooling yourself if you think they are better than a fifty pound pair from Asda.

And I speak from experience of someone with terrible eyesight who has been wearing glasses for my whole life, and have tried all types of opticians over the years - cheap, expensive, high street chains, independent, etc.

-8 / -8.5 here, and I would have to agree with Altarf. I've done £350 ultra thinned Zeiss lenses in decent frames, I've done Boots bogof back in the 1990s, and now I'm on Asda's 2-pair varifocal offer. And they've all been good for the couple of years I've worn them until my prescription changed again, none particularly better or worse than the others. There's no way I'd go back to expensive independent opticians.
