accomodation cancelled

We booked a holiday to Costa Teguise (lanzarote) a few weeks ago with Jet2.com, we are due to travel on Friday 17th June, today, 48 hours before we depart, they ring us to tell us the accomodation is overbooked, however offer us a different accomodation, in Playa Blanca, and £40 each compensation.

What do people think of this?

Thanks

Have you looked up reviews for the alternative accommodation? Is it the same standard as what you originally booked?
  • Which 2 hotels are involved?

Thankyou for your replies, been trying to look at reviews, some are good, others are bad. The original hotel Galleon Playa, Costa Teguise was originally booked, due to its location, close to beach, shops, 20 mins from airport etc, due to having arthritis and not being able to walk great distances.
The alternative is THB Tropical Island, Playa Blanca, 600km from shops, 700km from beach, 1km from resort centre and 45mins from airport.

600km from shops and 700km from beach!? Getting to the shops and beaches every day will be a pain....
  • The Tropical Island does have a supermarket on site, but how good it is will depend on what you want to buy. The did used to run a shuttle bus to the Dorada beach, but I don't know if they still do.

Looking at Jet2Holidays website it looks like Costa Teguise and Playa Blanca availability has more or less all gone from the 17th. You could ask them if there is another alternative to the one they've offered. You never know.

Have a look around the internet and see if you can find something with another company at a similar price. If so, cancel with Jet2 and rebook.

Lanzarote is really busy, and hotels are running near maximum occupancy. I'm surprised we're not hearing more about them overbooking.

Playa Blanca is lovely, I think there is a thread on her written by a resident there. Maybe ask any questions on there that are concerning you.

    ETA here it is: https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/846789

That article was written by the lovely Elle, who has in fact moved to the mainland, but I'm sure she'd still be happy to help.

You're right. Playa Blanca is lovely, and is the only resort I'll stay in on Lanzarote.

    Hi

I just came here to see if anyone can help as I have a similar situation that is making me feel sick.

I booked with Thomas Cook to go to the same resort (Costa Teguise) and staying in El Trebol.

I was told on Monday that the hotel will not be 'ready' to take us in a matter of days - unbeknownst to us it is closed for refurbishment.

I had been offered other accommodation near by with confirmation expected today. No confirmation despite waiting tentatively all day so I called them (again!) - apparently they are now working 'by date order' and have just sorted hotels for those flying tomorrow. Really worried that our big family holiday (including my young girls flying for the first time and my elderly the in-laws) will be ruined by poor, or even NO accommodation!

I wonder if Thomas Cook are putting their weighty pressure on to local hotels to try to free up rooms to accommodate their customers?

They've not talked about any guarantee of a hotel or any compensation either and I really don't know where I stand legally??

    [sigh]
  • When are you due to go? TC applying weighty pressure won't help if there aren't any hotel rooms, or any rooms that are are on allocation to another company. When a hotel gives next to no notice of a delayed reopening it causes chaos, which is even worse this year due to Lanzarote (and the other Canary Islands) being so busy.
