  • Am panicking now, my items come from a smoking home, with a 2 year old child and four cats... Am I the worst person to buy off on eBay :rotfl:

In all fairness, we only smoke in one room of the flat (not the one with the eBay items in it) and everything eBay is put into a safe place (away from kid/cat)....

It's not smells I really have a problem with - I bought a DVD for DS a few weeks back and it came with food splattered on the cover

you not got a washing machine?
if you want goods only from non-smokers then you should ask, if it didn't state non- smoking household in the listing then no you shouldn't be able to send it back.
Not everything is machine washable! I have no real problem with smells on machine washable clothes, since a wash almost always solves the problem. Books, on the the other hand, will always smell if they've been exposed to cigarette smoke.
Sometimes, sellers' well-meaning attempts at improving smells with various sprays can make it worse: you get 2 nasty smells for the price of one.
I would agree, though, that customers should ask before bedding if smoke smells bother them and the listing doesn't say non-smoking household. Likewise, if pet smells bother you (or your own pets!) then ask about pets.
Sandra, your house may be spotless without any dog smells that a human could detect, but I suspect another dog or cat would be able to tell.
  • If an animal is kept clean then it's highly unlikely there'd be any smell on items you'd buy from the household.

I'd agree if you don't keep it/them clean and don't regularly clean their bedding/bowls etc it's more than likely it will give smells....pretty much as it would with humans who don't keep themselves clean etc.

To spray perfume or whatever on oneself is only half the battle.......anyone ever had to suffer been on the end of smokers breath???....YUK!

To answer the OP...I always ask if any items are from a smoking home...if so I won't bid for it. I doubt you can send it back on the basis it smells of smoke if you didn't ask in the first place though??

i don't smoke but i do have stinky teenagers and 3 cats living in my house.
i give any clothing a quick squirt with some febreze (half price in wilkinson's at the moment!) or other fabric freshener before posting. fortunately i've never had any negative feedback regarding smells!

my main problem seems to be getting cat hair stuck to the sellotape that i'm wrapping the packages with!
  • Putting cats in packages is cruel! :D
    My TV is broken!
Edit: refunded £515 for TV 1.5 years out of warranty - thank you Sale of Goods Act! :j

Yes but when you open something and it smells of pets, it goes quickly.
When it smells of fags, everything it touches smells, and it lasts ages
