PAC from O2 to transfer the number .
You are still in contract with O2 and will be required to pay the balance of your contract for the 7 months remaining .
Nothing to stop you buying a new sim free phone and using your existing number and O2 contract .0 -

In answer to your original question, as others have said there will be a remaining part of your contract outstanding and it will have to be paid off. You could put the SIM from your old phone into another phone and use the existing contract until it reaches the end of your minimum contract term. The iPhone SE uses a nano sized SIM by the way.
You can buy an iPhone SE from Apple on finance, although from memory the APR is nothing special. John Lewis also sell them. Beware of Car Phone Warehouse and Argos, their iPhones tend to lock to the network of the first SIM you insert.
I replaced an iPhone 5 with an SE 64GB version (bought as a trade in at an Apple Store and SIM free/not locked) and am impressed with the SE, there have been various grumbles about the SE but for me it's spot on. The security features are second to none and Apple Pay is great for buying a packet of sweets with a credit card :rotfl:0 -
GIffgaff have a scheme to buy phones on a monthly basis, but you'd also have to buy a sim card and payg topup0
