    True.
Tripadvisor etc didn't exist the last time I travelled in Europe (although the internet wasn't widely available either) and I guess the places I stayed at back then must have closed or changed their names.

It was a lot easier then, the only choice was the local inn, monastery or caravanserai.

Maybe the OP is aimed at recent travellers? I wouldn't feel happy reccomending somewhere I had stayed at some time ago.

Anyway I will kick it off, for a budget trip to one of the most scenic bays in Malta (Marsaxlokk) this is a great place to stay. When we stayed there we didn't actually pick it for budget, but because of the stunning location.

There are no prices on the website now and it was undergoing a full refurb whilst we were there so prices may have risen, but it was incredibly cheap. Not a fancy place by any means but functional and very clean. The restaurant downstairs serves good food but it is not an elegant eatery. Close by there are lots of other restaurants and there is a market right in front of the hotel most days but a big one on Sundays. We would definitely go back.

    Hope this suits someone!

That looks good but I really don't like accommodation websites with no prices.

In europe( France mainly, Italy Portugal and Spain etc) the f1 ( formula 1 chain is ridiculously cheap clean, modern and basic.

Some rooms used to contain a triple bunk ( not sure if they still do these) and can be reserved and cancelled at the last minute, so great as a first reservation , which can be cancelled if you find prices drop elsewhere.

Quick check -hotel Port Du Chatillon Paris £36 a night room 2 persons , or £52 a night with ensuite type facilities.Ive stayed here a long time ago, located for easy reach of the underground into Paris
Where else can you get this assured quality and price in Paris!
If driving, check if car parking is extra.

It's the Accor group, there are other hotels where the star rating and goes up.

Tune hotel is a decent bet for London, also Edinburgh. Never stayed in Newcastle or Liverpool branches but they are very clean and cheap. Be sure of what you're getting and what you need to bring yourself for the best rstes.Campanile and Ibis/Ibis Budget hotels are pretty ubiquitous around Europe and the world. They're clean, modern, cheap and can be fairly central.
AirBnB has been a recent revelation. Put in your budget and see what pops out. Having cooking facilities can save a bit compared to a hotel and the local knowledge and help is priceless.
The best thing to do is search a screen scraper like Skyscanner Hotels, look at the options, look at the distance, the reviews, the facilities and work out what's right for you. The cheapest isn't always the best value. The best hotel or place to stay is clean, safe and has however much or little you need to be comfortable and happy.

Well, I was young and naive and didn't know any better :D

Long term, my plan is to revisit the (few) places I liked best in Europe when I get too old to want to bother with long haul flights anymore :)

This place falls in with the spirit of the thread, and if you do find yourself on the Thai-Laos border at Nong Khai, it's the place to stay...

It's sat right on the Mekong. Easy to get to by overnight sleeper train from Bangkok.

    You won't want to leave.:)
  • Thanks for your replies everyone.

This is is a great way to share knowledge among MSE users, some great tips coming through.

Personally, I'm taking my kids on an Interrail in two years' time (kids are free up to 12 years of age) and I'm looking for beautiful places to visit with amazing accommodation that won't break the bank, but that MSE members have visited themselves so I can be sure they're worth a look.

I found this amazing looking hotel in Budapest but as far as I can tell it doesn't take children (it won't let me book them).

I'm going to email them to find out but I'll be gutted if I can't take them there.
Could you do with a Money Makeover?
