You go into the Bios by tapping the Del key or similar depending on make and model of PC (see manufacturers site) when in the Bios go to Boot options and just make sure CD-Rom is 1st boot device and save the settings.

Insert XP CD then retsart PC and then use recovery console and wait a moment then hit enter for no boot volume label and wait then type fixboot when done hit Ctrl-Alt-Del and let PC start as normal.

ok. i got it into recovery and tried to recover but am now getting the message"load needed dlls for kernel" so not sure how to proceed.

i have downloaded a new version of xp but it wont install either as i get the kernel message from that process too.

ps. i managed to get chkdsk to run and it seemed to show no problems!
  • This is the only thing I could find apart from other stuff from google, I think you may have to reinstall over the top or upgrade.

As long as you have a COA

the recovery console seemed to fix it i had to quick format the drive so lost all her data.
doesnt matter too much as i dont think she had much on there and would rather lose what she had than buy a new laptop.
    thanks guys.
