Could be a hardware issue with the drive or possibly a BIOS setting that has corrupted. If you boot the PC and get into the BIOS is the drive detected and shown correctly?0 -
i recently had the same unmountable boot volume error.
have you touched the insides of the laptop?0 -

Normally when a PC boots up you see a black screen with writing on that tells you to press a key for certain functions. Depending on the BIOS the key changes, could be delete, could be an F key etc.0

Do you have a Windows XP CD to run Recovery Console? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/297185
Or this tool might be available in a recovery partition.0 -

my prob was with a desktop, but im not sure if this will help or not but check the hard drive is connected to the laptop properly as my problem was a loose ide cable0 -
Yes run the recovery console, and type "CHKDSK /r" (without the quotes).
Should take a couple of hours to complete, but is likely to solve your problem. Please try it.0 -
+1, has done the job every time I've seen the UnmountableBootVolume message.Scaptain_Carlet wrote: »Yes run the recovery console, and type "CHKDSK /r" (without the quotes).

It may be from corrupted/damadged hardware... if the frequencies of this Blue Screen (Unmountable Boot Volume) increases, you may want to consider backing up your important files and getting a new Hard Drive0 -
Additionally, to help prevent this sort of thing happening again:
Everytime you have a system problem/power cut/ lockup etc where you don't shut down properly, this easy preventitive measure is a great tip to remember:
In windows, go to start, click 'run'
type "CHKDSK /f" without quotes. Next time there's a reboot there'll be a quick preventitive check which will automatically fix any issues. The CHKDSK /r in the recovery console is for recovery.0
