Praise for Asda British strawberries.

Just delicious and only £1.50 for a punnet. We are having them for breaky, lunchtime and evening meal.

I'll pass as I bet they're the totally cr#p elsanta variety. The winter imports these days are much better than the rubbish British ones that flood the supermarkets in the summer.

£7 per kilo for very tasty cherries in Lidl at the moment - that's something to really smile about.

I too avoid the horrid elsanta. Haven't met another British strawberry I don't like though!

I was a greengrocer from 1972 to 1996....and believe me, the only reasons they always seem to sell elsanta are:

    They colour up quite quickly
    They are disease resistant
They don't grow excessively big or small
They are sturdy and can be transported
They have a long cropping season

The fact that they taste like sh*t doesn't come into it, they are dreadful.

If you can find them at farm shops or green grocers, try for

    Hapil
    Gorella
    Cambridge favourite

Which taste gorgeous and are real british strawberries, not the Dutch imported elsanta ones!

Where as my last punnet of Asda Strawberries the other week I chucked most away the next day. I checked them thoroughly before buying and they looked good, but by the next day most had gone yukky.

Aldi ones on the other hand are frequently still perfect up to a week later (when my daughter hasn't raided them and eaten them all) in the fridge.

My error, it reads like they are Dutch. They're not Dutch, they are grown in the uk.

The variety is elsanta which was originally developed in holland.

Whilst I'm not a fan of Te*co I've found their 'imperfect' strawberries at £1.00 a punnet really good. All odd sizes and shapes with great taste - the punnet I have just now is 'Sontana'.

I've just eaten some Capri British straws. They were £1.79 from Sains, I got them on a yellow sticker, half price. Tasted very nice. I would not pay full price for them. Last week I got some from Aldi, £1.29 normal price, can't find the label to check variety, but they were nice also.

  • Went to my local greengrocer yesterday. Saw a punnet of Belgium strawberries and they are absolutely delicious. Very surprised but Asda's loss as I won't be getting their strawberries again.

G/grocer was also selling British strawberries but label did not indicate type or where they are from in UK. Will ask them later this week and whether they are OK with me trying one.
