I need some advice on buying a new blu ray or DVD player.

I have a Samsung UE40H6400 and the speck is as follows
LED TV Screen.
Full HD (1080p) display resolution.
Active 3D TV with optional 2D to 3D conversion.
Includes 2 pairs of 3D glasses.. Have no idea where these are now !!
Screen size: 40 inches.

Anyway I need a new blu ray or DVD player. I don't watch that many DVD's and at the moment I've no blu ray discs. So I'm wondering what to buy
A cheep and cheerful blu ray or DVD player
Or a decent blu ray to future proof

I would appreciate your advice and recommendations on what to buy and also any DONT BUYS

As always many thanks for your advice

Kevin

Given the low cost of boxes today, Blu Ray all the way. I got my Sony Blu Ray from Richer sounds for £20. And they all play standard CDs and DVDs too.

The ultra cheap boxes do have lesser build quality, but given that the OP doesn't watch many discs, I agree a cheap Blu Ray is probably the best choice.
  • We use a ps3. Cost us £70 from Game and the kids can play games and I use it for Nowtv.

I got a 3d blu ray player which has some smart functions. Might be worth considering a smart blu ray player if you don't have any smart function on your tv - mine has Netflix, BBC etc. built in. I watch a lot of 3d content though, as I recently got a projector for the big screen experience at home.
The PS3 idea is a good one - lots of great games still available (cheap) plus it has all the tv catch up services as well as playing blu rays and 3d, and you can pick them up for next to nothing.

Mines a smart Samsung: Netflix, BBC, etc. So would I be correct in assuming a basic one would be satisfactory.

Just one thing I'm confused about the Samsung is 3D ready so would I be correct in assuming that as well as a 3D ready tv's I'd also need a blu ray capable of playing 3D. I don't think I'll ever want it, but you never know

All but the cheapest new Blu Ray players are 3D capable. However, 3D has not been the success it was hoped and is slowly disappearing..

Kah, you would need a blu ray player that can play 3d. They usually say it on the box, and as Money says, most are these days. I disagree that it's disappearing though, loads of films been on 3d for years now, most have a 3d blu ray on sale afterwards, and most come with the 2 discs - 3d and not 3d versions - so you get the choice. A lot of my family and friends buy the 3d version with 2 discs if they are buying a film, and give me the 3d disc for half price if they don't want it, cos they know I watch 3d a lot. The active 3d is a better experience in my view - which is what you'd have on your Samsung - but some people can suffer headaches if you watch it too long. I'd recommend giving it a try anyway.

Bigphil, Moneyineptitude is correct, 3D is a dead man walking with both Samsung and LG confirming they will be phasing out the format due to the fact the sales of such flopped, badly. Even SKY, who championed 3D, have ceased its live 3D channel and gone on demand only, due to the fact virtually no one watched it.

It'll amble along for a few years, with 3D DVDs still for sale but even they will eventually stop.
