As I remember the public beach at Marmaris is very stony and the water had visible oil from the marina and boat trips!
A lovely day trip is one to Gokova Beach, lovely little village and beautiful beach. www.turkuaz-guide.net/gokova.html
Pamukkale was a bit of a disappointment. From the hillside below it looks pretty, but up close there is an incredible amount of erosion and bits seemed to be reinforced with concrete. Access is limited, you certainly can't walk in the pools as the publicity shots show. The baths there are nice but the water can be a bit irritating to sensitive skin and eyes. www.kusadasi.biz/pamukkale/
A boat trip past the rock carvings at Dalyan was a great day out. You can try the mud baths - if you don't mind grit in every imaginable place! Stand out in the sun laughing at everyone as the mud dries and rinse off in the sulphur springs. Beach is nice, but parts may be cordoned off if the turtles are laying or hatching. www.dalyan.com/html/around.htm
Best buys we found were Turkish towels (cotton is farmed locally and factories manufacture towels for Christie, M&S etc), saffron and there was a Quiksilver outlet in Marmaris that was very reasonable.
"Cheap", "Fast", "Right" -- pick two.

• Hi,
we went to Turkey about 5 years ago and stayed in Gumbet, a resort close to Bodrum., and I have to admit I will NEVER go to Turkey again. The resort was quite lively. The hassle we had was unbelievable, people chasing after you trying to make you buy stuff and being really offended when you told them you weren't interested. I came to the point when we dreaded going out at night time, but saying that it was bad enough during the day!!

My husband's boss has an apartment close to Fethiye (not sure if spelt right) . They have told us that the hassling aspect has apparently been outlawed in all of Turkey due to the huge number of people being put off by it.

That said, I always think wherever you go abroad, stick to Self-Catering as you are stuck if the hotel food is !!!!, and you can go to a different restaurant every night, which is what we do and then go back to our favourite the last night! Try to stick to somewhere non-resorty but still with a few facilities.
