It's not a new one. I went round at least one place (for sale, rather than rental) with other potential buyers about 18yrs ago. I wanted to put an offer in, but they beat me to it. <shrug>Joint viewings?
Is this some EA invention....?
In the end, it was a good thing - we found somewhere better.0 -

Buying yeah, open days etc but i have to admit i've never heard of it when renting.0 -
When we viewed a rental, it had just come on the market that day and we were one of 4 couples viewing at the same time.
We asked if we could rent it without even seeing it as it was all about school catchment, but they did not allow that.
The viewing was at 6.30pm.
They said it would come down to whoever reserved it first thing next day with deposit.
We were on the phone hitting redial before the agents opened and thankfully we got it!
I would call them to confirm what you need to do to ensure you are first to reserve it. Is it first who pays deposit? etc0 -

Sadly this is now a thing for renting (at least in London) along with bidding wars on how much rent over asking you're prepared to offer and having to "sell" yourself as tenants with a paragraph to go to the landlord on what you do for a living etc. It's awful.0 -
