Using smart tv in unsmart mode

Urgently need a new tv and they all seem to be smart tvs. Our son is pressing me to get one and he will set it up connected to our home router.
The thing is the signal is not good in our house and it would involve moving the router from our home office and other stuff and I really do not have the time for the upheaval at present.
Is it possible to buy a new smart tv and then just connect it up to existing Virgin Media v+ box until we are ready for more radical changes?

Yes, my parents have done exactly this.0

Yes, it shouldn't be a problem, the smart features will stop working after about 12 months anyway as the TV manufacturers don't bother to issue updates for old models.
If you do want to hook the TV up a pair of home plugs are an easy way to do it without having to move the router.0 -
Just don't connect it to the internet I have a smart TV that's not connected as I use a Roku box for online services instead.0

Had a bad experience have we? Not found that to be the case with my LG - 2014 model still getting app updates....0 -
its possible a new smart TV will have built in wifi. My Samsung does and its a couple of years old.
If so there's no need to run an Ethernet cable from the router0 -

plenty of dumb tv's out there. i would rather keep tv as a display and attach a smart box to it"The Holy Writ of Gloucester Rugby Club demands: first, that the forwards shall win the ball; second, that the forwards shall keep the ball; and third, the backs shall buy the beer." - Doug Ibbotson0 -

Except the OP has stated the wifi signal is weak and doesn't want the upheaval of it.
Home plugs are a solution, no upheaval involved.0 -
