Microsoft Hotmail a/c SUCKS!

I followed the appropriate route & asked Microsoft to close my son's email a/c (Hotmail) & explained that he had died. In response to my request I got this automated reply............
"Thank you for your inquiry about a Microsoft personal email account.
The right to privacy and the security of our customers’ data is a fundamental concern to Microsoft. We take your privacy concerns very seriously. We also recognize there are circumstances when family members or other parties need access to a customer’s email account in the event of a customer’s death or medical incapacitation.
At this time, we are not able to accept new requests by family members or third parties for email account data. We are in the process of defining an improved, secure, legal process to request access to customer data by a third party in the event of a customer’s death or medical incapacitation.
We realize that these may be difficult times for those seeking access to their loved ones’ information. Once we have a new defined process, we will document it clearly and communicate the process on support.office.com and in the Outlook.com community.
Thank you for your understanding".
I've now spent hours deleting every bit of content & will leave it inactive (advise from MSE was that it should close automatically after 270 days of no use). But their customer service SUCKS!
Rant over.

Seen it all, done it all, can't remember most of it.

seemed helpful enough.
Hopefully you'll feel the same way should a child of yours die.
Clearly you also failed to read the word CLOSE. It is clear enough that I did not seek "access", nor ask for "data". I was unable to CLOSE the a/c so simply asked them to do that.
Clearly they are too 'simple' to understand the meaning of the single word CLOSE.Seen it all, done it all, can't remember most of it.0 -
you don't need them to close it, Presumably you have access as you were able to delete content

Yes, but I can't stop more emails coming in by the lorry load! Mostly junk so I don't know why I'm bothered, just wanted to have everything dealt with appropriately but Microsoft has been more trouble than it was worth.
Have discovered through a helpful MSE user that if I just leave it, not accessed, for 270 days it will close down anyway so we'll just do that & leave the junk to pile up.
Contact through Microsoft's Facebook page seemed to be achieving what I'd asked for, politely escalated, but then after a load more too-ing & fro-ing it just resulted in being sent the same response!
Closed his other a/c through Google with no aggravation from them whatsoever. Time to move on from going round in circles with Microsoft.
PS - Already been down the route of the link you sent (thanks though), but it sends a 'code'........ to the mobile of our son which obviously is no longer connected.Seen it all, done it all, can't remember most of it.0 -
It may be easier for you to delete the account on the laptop/pc you are using.0

The only problem by just leaving it is that email accounts can be hacked by rsoles with a device in farflung places like Egypt or Turkey like my Hotmail was and then they can further cause distress by sending out spam or phishing emails to all addressees. It's best to log in and delete everything then change the password to something really strong then leave it.You know what uranium is, right? It's this thing called nuclear weapons. And other things. Like lots of things are done with uranium. Including some bad things.

Hotmail accounts can't be hacked!. You must have given out the password to them so they could get access. Probably through a phising site.0 -

Was there an option to choose another method ?
The advice posted below is good.0 -
You appear you have your sons password so can you login, change the mobile number registered on the account to yours and then follow the close account link. This would send the code to your phone. You could then close the account.0

I don't know how HMRC allows Microsoft to pay their Tax bill with chickens.
