Money transfers to India?

I wonder if anyone here has experience of sending money from the UK to a bank account in India? If so, I would be grateful if you could post details of the service that offers a good combination of reliable service and low fees.

(Before anyone suggests using a debit card, this is to pay someone there for work they are doing for me. I am in India now but have to leave before the work will be finished, and I don't want to pay in advance.)

You can make a wire transfer (TT) to an Indian bank with XE.com.

I use them for GBP to Euro transfers & they are quick & reasonably priced.

I've just noticed that TransferWise are able to send INR to a bank account in India, 0.7% fee at mid-market rates.

I use transferwise to send to my Indian accounts or to relative's. Very quick, very little charges and so far has been very reliable.
